Well, this aged hilariously… Now we’ll see how the refunds for those who pre-ordered worked out. Already had my AirBNB refunded, and hadn’t purchased a badge, as I was hedging bets. (And have zero luck with the housing lottery every year) Frankly, I would not be upset if Gen Con crashed and burned hard. Giving a chance for another convention or group of conventions to organically grow and take its place. People ruin everything, and GenCon is close to ruined for me as it is. Gaming conventions are great, but I feel too many peope have wrapped themselves up in the idea of GenCon as an institution. In the words of Top Dollar, “Time to move on…”

Gencon to me is half nostalgia and half spectacle. I don’t agree that Gencon’s presence precludes anyone else from putting together a convention, nor working to grow said convention. However, if you’re like me and your first convention was Gencon, there will always be a place for it on my list of things to consider doing that year.

I hope it survives past this point.

I’ve been to Gen Con twice. The second time was an identical experience to the 1st time. I don’t care about ‘celebrities’ or the product aspect of our hobby. One shots with strangers while not a bad thing isn’t really my jam. When the it came up to go a 3rd time I was like nah, I’d rather do something new and different.
