I really enjoyed this episode Dan and found it really useful. I was really into Battletech and Mechwarrior in the 80’s and 90’s and was across the history at that point. When I started to get back into the game recently, there was just too much to read and not enough time. I miss alot of the jokes at my weekly game because of this.

I would love to hear some mini episode with a deeper dive on some of the factions in the game. On this one you hit the mark on detail vs brevity, I found the whole lot interesting.

On AToW, I would say try it out for a while. I found it completely intimidating at first, you can pretty much just throw your 1st character away, but it gets easier. The problem is that there is some stuff that happens at the end of the character creation process that is handy to know at the start of the process. The 2nd character is much easier to create.

Oh and I meant to say, I didn’t realise that the clans spoiled Battletech for me til FtB told me so ;-) That might be overstating it a bit, but you guys did help me to realize that the thing that made me love the game so much at the start was the whole Knights is massive suits of armour feel to the game.

Thanks for the helpful primer! I’ve always been casually interested in Battletech, ever since I used to play the old Mechwarrior 2 demo on my parents’ brand spankin’ new Pentium 133 MHz computer when I was about 12. I’ve sadly never had an opportunity to play the tabletop game. I picked up the quickstart for A Time of War on Free RPG Day this year, and it seems pretty interesting.

One of the things that interests me in the setting is how strong it’s based on European history. The old Star League is kind of like the Roman Empire, the noble houses are — well — noble houses, and the Word of Blake Jihad is a lot like the 30 Years’ War. The parallels break down a little bit with the Clans (for reasons like you mention, their storyline doesn’t seem quite as realistic), but in many ways they’re similar in effect to the Mongol invaders in Eastern Europe or the Islamic conquests in the very early Middle Ages.

I for one am a huge fan of the Battletech content!
