Yeah, Russia had all those lovely coastal cities. Zylo learned that a land war was the painful way to do it. But, I underestimated the value of cultural items (or over estimated the value of conquest.)

Boy, I learned England can be a military monster in mid-game. What with the Ship of the Line and the longbow archers, I could hammer cities at little to no real risk to my units. It took patience to win that way but it was a forgone conclusion. Had I know, I would have been a little more aggressive up front with city states and expanded that way. More than I did I mean.
