Re: New Year's Resolutions

Anywho, my resolution this year is three fold.

Actually work on game projects during the quarter instead of back burning everything.

Make Platinum Rank in League of Legends (this will help me stick to a game that can be played in short-ish sessions, and help me not spend money on tons of new games)

Read 6 books. I tried 12 last year and that just didn't happen. But I almost did 6, and considering one of them was an extremely long and dense fantasy novel I think 6 is super doable.

I came up with something to help myself today. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, I shall do as many push-ups as I can, and record how many I manage. Hopefully that'll burn off some of this excess weight, or at least shift the balance from fat to muscle. I chose push-ups because they're low-impact, easy, and give me a good yardstick for how much I've improved. Today's total: ten, after which my arms felt like wet noodles. Room for improvement.

I'm just going to try to be more positive this year. I had enough family drama B.S. in 2015 to last several lifetimes.

I'm also going to try to NOT chew/rip up my cuticles anymore and try to get my hands looking less like a ravenous maw's dentist. That was is a nervous/bored habit, though, so I imagine it will be tougher to break. I sense a serious investment in hand cream in my future.

It might be an oral thing. My dad used to know a guy that would gnaw the crap out of cigars. He wouldn't smoke them, but he'd end up destroying one each day. I know folks that chew on pens. That might be a better thing than your own body parts. :-)

Accountability update on my pushups: stuck with ten through January. Moved up to 12 for February, because 10 was getting to be trivial.

New Year's Resolutions 2016 [Mid-year update and course correction]

Table Top Gaming and RPGs:

1. Play three new games.
(success) Played Quill, a solo letter writing PRG. Played a solo version of A Fool's Journey twice, Rewind (also solo), Rebel Galaxy, Centauri Sector, and Uncharted Worlds (GMing and loving it).
2. Play two ancient games from my closet.
(success) WarpWar, Star Trek: The Adventure Game, and I'm looking at Starship Troopers as well as a few others.
3. Finish and post some of those TTwR playsets that Leoff sent me.
(pending) I'm in the process of converting TTwR to a PWYW DTRPG product and I need to sort things out and update the site before I post anything else. I don't want to accidentally appropriate fan material, but I still want to make it available.
4. Create an 'exhibition game' for Rewind.
(to-do) It's probably terribly wrong, but I've been thinking about a Rewind game revolving around a mass shooting/terrorist event. If I go that route, I might have to drop the public aspect of the game.
5. Participate in Game Chef 2016.
(success) Didn't cross the finish line, but I did come up with some ideas to hold on to and I was active in the G+ community during the contest. Will certainly read a bunch of the cool entries I saw.
6. Participate in SGAM2016 (Solo Gaming Appreciation Month)
(to-do) This is in November
7. Create a game to go with my paper craft project.
(success/WIP) Created Flick Tanks as a video game that was based on rules for a table top game.
8. Continue posting to Tephra Falls.
(partial) I posted some more, have a new episode half written. But, other things have stolen my time.
9. Play test someone's game.
(success) Helped a friend test some game ideas and helped Zylo playtest his latest game.
10. Increase my activity in the Fear the Boot Game Design group on G+.
(currently failing) Busy with the game designing and creation, terrible about being social about it.

Game Programming / 3D Models / Paper craft:

1. Add new functionality to Map Gen
(success) created Hex Gen a map grid maker, used it to update the WarpWar text. Also added sector population based on Uncharted Worlds.
2. Use the Zero Tarot logic (or a new engine) to complete Hack-a-tron.
(to-do) Almost no progress here.
3. Create HymenopTerra as an electronic hive building/exploration game.
(to-do) My programming energy went unexpectedly into Flick Tanks
4. Participate in NaGaDeMon (board/video game creation)
(to-do) This is in November
5. Decide what I want to do with Tangent Space Marines and act on it.
(success) Officially on the back burner, I might need to recruit my son as a co-creator
6. Decide what I want to do with Frozen Thunder and act on it.
(success) Decided to halt this and work on Flick Tanks (call it Frozen Thunder: the casual game.)
7. Decide what I want to do with Tactical Command and act on it.
(success) Shelved for this year, may come back to this as a video game. Also holding on to the option of re-writing it for DTRPG/Wargame Vault release.
8. Decide what I want to do with Cluster War and act on it.
(success) Shelved for this year, may come back to this as a campaign system for the above. Also holding on to the option of re-writing it for DTRPG/Wargame Vault release.
9. Create new 3D models specifically for paper crafting.
(pending) Worked on designing hex tokens for a game idea. Trashed that in order to work on models for Flick Tanks. I have 3d models that render fine in top down view, but they need work for 3D and paper crafting.
10. Create Pepakura templates for said models.
(pending) Made a few prototypes for the hex game, but dropped that with an eye for Flick Tanks the table top game.

Re: New Year's Resolutions

Postby zircher » Wed Jan 03, 2018 5:15 pm

Oh hey, I forgot to post something here for 2017. I still had a list, of course, I love my lists. :-)

2017 Resolutions

Table Top Gaming and RPGs

1. Play/Run a new RPG (Masks, Worlds in Peril, Epyllion, OVA, and 7th Sea are contenders)
Yes, but it wasn't these titles (English Eerie, Whirlwind Millionaire, Magical Fury.)
2. Play/Run an ancient game from my closet. (Looking at Pacesetter's Sandman from 1985)
Turned out Sandman was as bad today as it was in '85. Did play some Ogre, an older game that held up better.
3. Repackage TTwR for DTRPG.
Done!
4. Participate in Game Chef 2017.
Done!
5. Participate in Solo Gamer Appreciation Month, #SGAM2017
Done!
6. Play test someone's game.
Done, English Eerie and Whirlwind Millionaire.
7. Create more content for Tangent Zero on DTRPG.
Done and not finished. Made updates, but the Dawn of Empire expansion got stuck on the author's side.
8. Create/Enhance a web toy for table top gaming.
Kind of a fail, researched the hell out of Phaser and Babylon.
9. Play a new boardgame.
Actually several card games.
10. Play more bucket list games.
Done and the last session ended with a bang. (multiple PCs, um, exploded)

Game Programming / 3D Models / Paper craft:

1. Create a web based dungeon explorer.
Didn't get past the design stage, partially due to the big game engine hunt.
2. Participate in the Back Burner Jam in January.
Got swamped in January and failed.
3. Create HymenopTerra as electronic game, platform undecided.
Nope.
4. Participate in NaGaDemon 2017.
Participated and made a lot of progress, but still need to finish the massive encounter table.
5. Create Flick Tanks in Unity.
Dropped Unity (and Phaser (and Babylon))
6. Create Tangent Space Marines in Unity.
Dropped Unity (and Phaser (and Babylon))
7. Create 3d spaceship for special project.
Fail.
8. Develop art pipeline converting from old formats to FBX.
Done but not needed 'cause Unity.
9. Participate in GMC #3.
Didn't like the theme, did a design but it didn't go beyond that.
10. Read three Unity programming books.
Done and a couple of Phaser books and a Babylon one.
11. Complete Traveller mapping project.
This really expanded into a major project and is on-going.
12. Work on a new papercraft project.
Fail, but did get a bunch of deckplans for when I try again.
13. Standalone Starmade server. (Got the hardware)
Got the server running and it idled due to the major re-write that Schine is doing to the game.

Over all not a bad year. I did a lot more off the record so I don't feel bad about my fails. Time to work on a new list.
