It might not even be correlated to the age of the dwarf. A young dwarf might be inclined to be so tied up in his rockbound heritage that he doesn't see the rest of the society that he lives in, and feels superior to the food-growers and cloth-weavers and brewers that make his career-driven life possible. An older dwarf might be increasingly aware that items which he thought of as comfortable conveniences are more and more becoming necessities. He's been around long enough to know that an artisan-based economy needs a consumer economy. He no longer views cultural isolation as valuable, or even desirable.

Regardless of age, a person might feel in sympathy with either attitude, or a mixture of both. And someone who's always prided himself on being the hardy undergrounder, scorning the effete topsiders, might have an interesting time of it when he's broken an ankle and finds himself confined to bed and limited to practicing drafting and fine work.
