Big Red Couch Podcast - Turning Bad Ideas Into Games

Postby Pruthian Caveman » Fri Jun 07, 2013 7:56 pm

A while ago, my friends & I started a podcast, The Big Red Couch, which I neglected to promote here, because I'm dim.

Each episode, we pull a random idea from the mystery box, take some time to think about it, and then try to pitch a game from the ideas we came up with.
Sometimes this works really well.
Sometimes horrible things happen.

We're going for a fortnightly release, and Episode Seven, Arrr! Here We Be, Becalmed Upon This Desolate Siding went up this morning*.

* that's Saturday morning in New Zealand, which is something like Mid-day Friday Central time

Another episode of The Big Red Couch dropped this morning*.

Episode Eight – Mecha Corps Receives Demobilization Orders

In which Craig is annoyingly literal, Ben considers tasks left undone, Kevin speculates upon what people do when they’re unsupervised, and Tonya looks at colonial politics.

* Well, morning for us.

Due to proximity to the 4th of July, we decided that this would be a good time for a Very Special Episode.

Episode Nine – The Big Red Couch Holiday Gaming Special

In which Tonya brings the whole podcast down by coming up with something touching, Craig does horrible things to established cultural traditions, Kevin makes Christmas shopping just a little bit more horrifying, and Ben looks at how, over his RPG career, gaming has become more aware of the media environment in which it operates.

And there’s a snake. A good one.

Episode Ten – Raised By Space Wolves

In which Craig starts with rogue military units and ends up, as he so frequently does, at Space Pirates, Ben considers Monastic Orders in the Emperor’s Name, Kevin dreams of Astral Wolves, and Tonya wonders what responsibilities we have towards past & future species, and just what you do when confronted with your frozen mythical ancestors.

Oddly, this one didn't turn into variations upon a Warhammer 40k theme, which is what I expected
I've somehow ended up in a podcast
The Big Red Couch - Turning Random Ideas Into Playable Games. Mostly.

Listening to this from the beginning and loving it! I really enjoy the world building and brainstorming that goes into each episode.

Episode Eleven – Neighbourhood Watch In The Future

In which Ben wonders about the struggles of neighbourhoods protecting themselves from the people (& things) in other, different, neighbourhoods, Kev goes entirely literal with the word ‘Neighbourhood’, Tonya does terrible, terrible things to your fond childhood memories of ‘The Jetsons’, and Craig wonders what’s out beyond the relatively tranquil borders of an isolated little town.

( for those of you struck with mad, terrible ideas based on our episodes, we've added a 'How To Play At Home' page, because we'd kind of like to hear what you came up with )

Episode Twelve – Starbutt Magic-Horse And The Existential Vacuum Of Modern Acquaintance

In which Ben considers the last days of an era in music, Tonya goes Noir with an unexpected femme fatale, Craig considers the possibility of Magical Pulp Adventure, and Kev comes up with something Monstrous.
