After a short time, [Melody] is quite surprised to discover that the first page is starting to make a kind of sense. Drawing on her lessons under Eisior she unravels the meaning hidden in the signs and symbols, and finds that it gives the formula for reading magical writings. How handy is that? :eh:

Studying hard, she attempts to cast the Read Magic spell, and then, with its help, she quickly reads through all the other pages in the book, discovering the wealth of magical spells held therein.

Wow! And here I wasted years as an apprentice, slaving away to an abusive master, when all this time I could have just stabbed a guy then read a book. Who knew ? :P

Why do you think they call it magic? :D

If you stab a gnoll he might let you have a lightning bolt.

That does appear to be the kind of game Arbuthnot is going for. I've spent most of my time since leaving home terrified of one thing or another.

In my day, wizard's didn't waste time reading books and studying, oh no. They went out and murdered things, because in d&d xp is an accruable currency  schools are terrifying affairs

Right. Burn the books, burn the schools, set fire to the forest and watch your XP grow!

Hey, in Lord of the Rings how many books did Gandalf read? A few, yes, in that old library, but mostly he went around beating things up with his stick and his sword. Badass! 8-)

Yeah, but Gandalf isn't a D&D-style wizard. Like the rest of Tolkien's wizards (or Istari), he was an angelic being that took human form. That would be like a D&D dragon doing the same thing and calling them a fighter 'cause they wear armor and beat things up. Mortals, typically, have to follow different rules. To "Gandalf," we have to multiclass. :D

Melody is slightly tired, but by no means in need of stopping; her last reverie was fairly close, and although the day has been long the return journey has been relatively relaxed.

Although she does indeed see signs of Afrax's passing, they come more frequently in the form of snapped twigs and displaced foliage than footprints.
