I'm glad we've made it as far as we have and are still going. Thanks for bearing with my waxing and waning post frequency.. :) Weekends for some reason are tough for me.

Weekends seem to be tough for just about everybody. Seriously, it's dead around here most weekends.

Games bored statisticians play

So, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the posting rate for the longest running games, to see how they compare and if there are any apparent trends over time.

The longest game by post count is In The Lady's Shadow 2, by goatunit, but it actually only ran for a little over two years before coming to a bitter and premature end.

In The Lady's Shadow 2
Start: April 18, 2010
1st year: 4059
2nd year: 2436

Wow! That's some post rate. No wonder it's still the biggest game of all time.

Next two are longer running by time, but at a more sedate pace. Elder Scrolls: The Final Scroll, by goatunit, and Ashen Shores, by Larenil, have been going for 3.5 and 4 years respectively.

The Final Scroll
Start: December 31, 2012
1st year: 2190
2nd year: 1840
3rd year: 1180

Ashen Shores
Start: August 6, 2012
1st year: 1961
2nd year: 1496
3rd year: 842
4th year: 558

Pretty similar, with a noticeable tailing off year by year.

Next comes Earthdawn: Vultures Circle The Flames, by GordonGoblin, which only lasted seven months but picked up a single late post a few months later, giving it a final duration over a year.

Vultures Circle The Flames
Start: May 24, 2012
1st year: 1770

Finally, we have the newest of our long distance games, Tales Of The Venture Society, by keithcurtis, whch has been running a little over one year now and is still going strong.

Tales Of The Venture Society
Start: May 11, 2015
1st year: 1438

I was a limo driver at the time with a netbook in the car, so I could actually keep up with LF.

I just checked. ITLS2 got 200 posts in the first week. That's enough to put it in the top 20 games.

Tragically, the culling of old threads has removed many of the old games from the forum, so we'll never again be able to go back and relive those adventures, or share them with friends and family. :(

I tried to save some of my favourites by viewing them again before the cull took place. However, it appears that what was said was not what was done, and instead of deleting all threads that had not been posted to or viewed in the past two years Dan deleted all threads that had not been posted to in the past three years. So all my efforts were in vain and the old games have gone.

A little digging around in the Wayback Machine might help.

The search function won't work and you probably can't sign in. Pages may be missing here and there. Still, it's better than nothing. :)

Edit: Actually, it looks like it's only got the first page of that thread. I haven't messed around too much with the dates of capture though. Navigating forum threads in a time machine is pretty confusing.
