Longest running PbP games

Postby Lord Foul » Sat Jun 27, 2015 12:14 pm

I got bored again... :shifty:

...so I got to wondering which games here on the forum had lasted the longest. I thought about working out duration from set-up to last post, but often a game that had finished got a much later kick from a single post or so, so I reckoned that would be both misleading and time-consuming to work out. I decided just to log the games with the most posts in their IC thread, since that is where the game itself actually takes place. Some games had longer OOC threads, but that's just the players and GM wittering on about stuff and not directly relevant.

So, here they are: the top 20 PbP games on the FtB forum :D

1. In The Lady's Shadow 2 (goatunit): [ 7597 ]
2. Elder Scrolls: The Final Scroll (goatunit): [ 4676 ]
3. Ashen Shores (Larenil): [ 4212 ]
4. Earthdawn: Vultures Circle the Flames (GordonGoblin): [ 1771 ]
5. Changeling: The Lost (MoonHawke): [ 819 ]
6. Savage World Fantasy: Kingsmarch (JeStor): [ 554 ]
7. In The Lady's Shadow (goatunit): [ 530 ]
8. Werewolf: The Forsaken (mumblebear): [ 499 ]
9. Tales of the Venture Society (keithcurtis): [ 481 ]
10. Wild Talents (IronJelly): [ 472 ]
11. Freehold of the Rising Dawn (Artimisia): [ 437 ]
12. USS Prometheus (goatunit): [ 421 ]
13. Obsidian Security Solutions (goatunit): [ 419 ]
14. The Steeplejack Irregulars (The Almighty Bear): [ 289 ]
15. Savage Mass Effect: A Relic of Society (mindtakerr): [ 286 ]
16. Warhammer 40K Play by Post! (Mizwrath): [ 272 ]
17. Monster's Ball (D3M410): [ 259 ]
18. The Dark Streets of Fabletown (mindtakerr): [ 243 ]
19. After the Captain was Poison'd (Fallout_Monkey): [ 227 ]
20. The Fear the Vampire Files (cartwheel): [ 192 ]

Those marked in orange text are still running, so likely to increase post count.

Woot! I'm in the top 10!

I'm in it for the long haul, too. I have a pretty good idea what will be the main action in Volume 2.

Your game has got to be the fastest growing one too, Keith. You're going at a steady 10 posts per day, which is almost unheard of around these parts (except perhaps for some of goat's games).

I hope we can keep it up. One of the goals of the system is to encourage player posting.

I am more than a little surprised to be in two of those! I would have predicted there were lots more long running games here on FtB.

Very few games here get past a few pages long before they fizzle out. I don't really understand it myself, except to assume that in some cases the GM thinks they'd like to run a game but then finds the reality of it doesn't come up to expectations, or real life gets in the way. Some games also are unlucky in attracting players with no staying power, and they fizzle out through lack of interest.

As you can see, only a relatively few make it to the 50 page mark, and only the very best manage to go on and on and on into hundreds of pages.

In my experience, there's no sure-fire recipe for success, either. It requires a synergy that may or may not happen. At the barest minimum, you need at least one dedicated GM, and one dedicated player. You also need to make sure that other players can't crash the game by their absence (due to a lack of a particular skill, piece of information, or other plot utility.)

On-line games can also suffer catastrophically from the Holidays Syndrome that destroys FtF campaigns. It's very easy to ignore a game if you get out of the habit of checking and posting. I try and post a minimum of once per day if a player, and often much more, so long as I do not begin to dominate.

LF, your boredom just made my day.

I used to feel like my first/only attempt at a PBP was a miserable failure on my part. But anything good enough to make #8 on your list couldn't have been quite as bad as all that. :D

Hah! He's back! :D

Bear, as I recall the players in your game were enthusing about it almost to the point of blubbing all over the forums. Most unseemly behaviour, but suggestive of a pretty decent game for all that.

Good to see you back among us. You've been missed... frequently... :D

P.S. You're now No.9 due to Keith's post whoring. ;)
