Hengis will call our men, and our mercenary allies, close so they can be given instructions.

He tasks them with rounding up, disarming and securing the enemy prisoners. They'll need to find a secure place to keep the prisoners, where they can be confined and guarded. He stresses that these men are prisoners of war and should be treated with respect and dignity, but not so much that they might harbour designs to escape. Hengis appoints Uuth to lead this detail, and orders the rest of our men to follow his lead in this.

Next, he checks on Jarl Dengeir, calling on the old priest Balfhe to take charge of the Jarl's comfort and see him safely to a place where he might rest and recuperate from the day's exertions. Balfhe has helpers who can assist him, but if he needs additional guards Hengis will appoint some of his own men to serve as extra protection.

Having done this, he turns to his friends.

"Right, I think we can take the time fer a wee look at the way intae the tunnels noo. Just enough tae see what's gaein' on doon there, eh?" :eh:

He leads them to the throne room to search for the way down. On the way he mentally gives the dogs praise for their obedience and instructs them to stay close to him but also to sniff out the scent trails of anyone leaving the room by hidden ways.

Uuth orders his men to perform the task of organizing the prisoners into small, manageable groups. Their hands are to be bound and they'll be loaded into wagons for transport to the fort.

With the aid of the dogs, and of course the compromised tile of the throne room floor, a hidden hatch is quickly discovered. With urgency somewhat relieved and emotions calmed, the party is able to soak in a bit more atmosphere than Hengis and Thael managed previously. Access is provided by a wooden ladder, which leads down into a horizontal shaft which leads to the east. It smells of dank earth and appears to be very newly constructed--likely since the occupation. Its walls, ceiling, and floor consist of stone-chinked earth, natural rock, and reinforced wooden supports, with enough space for two to walk abreast.

As before, the sounds of struggle echo from deeper within.

Hengis will scan for thoughts down below.

If nothing is lurking in wait for us, he'll begin carrying his dogs down, one at a time. If Thael is willing to help that'll speed things up a little, as she also has a Fly spell on. If she doesn't want to pick up a shadow mastiff he'll do all three himself.

Once we're all down in the tunnel, he'll ask Gavel to give them enough light to see by, and lead the way, leaving enough room for Thael by his side. We'll have two of the dogs in front of us, on point, and the other one behind, ready to be sent in to help at need, with Kyle, so he can reinforce quickly if we run into trouble. Sven and Qadir can bring up the rear, giving them the space to disappear if they want to. As we move forward Hengis will scan ahead for stray thoughts.

If there isn't enough space down here to wield a greatsword, Kyle will switch to longsword and shield.

We have a few medium duration spells up (lasting around 12 minutes) and I'm unsure of the passage of time. I'm assuming they're still up for now but let me know if you feel I'm abusing this.

Since we are carrying on without a rest, Hengis, with the benefit of his death watch sense, will notice that Kyle is still suffering the after-effects of the dunmer's sword blows, something that he himself felt the effect of during their fight. He'll pause long enough to find and read a scroll of Lesser Restoration upon Kyle, then re-examine him to see if it has made any difference.

Lesser Restoration should restore 1d4 CON if it is not permanent. If it's permanent he'll need a Restoration spell.

Thaelestra will help with dog transport. However, once they are all down she begins the trek to where the sounds of battle are coming from.

"Stay." She says to one particular one who seems intent on following her, a wide dog grin on his face. "Och, listen to me asking you to behave when I'm not one for listening either." She whispers as she turns back to see Hengis examining Kyle.

"Fine, let's go stir up trouble. That's yer name. Trouble." She smirks and sets off, one Mastiff on her heels.

If Thael is off up ahead Hengis will not use his thought scan, lest he pick up her thoughts. A promise is a promise, after all.

"Och, there she goes again," he says to Kyle with a wry grin. "I expect we'll know it when she finds somethin'." :eh:

The damage is not permanent, and Hengis' scroll has the intended effect (3 Con healed).

Before long, the earthen tunnel honeycombs into a number of vacant hollows filled with cots and modest belongings, as well as found stone slabs hastily transformed into sacrificial altars, menhir, and similar occult objects. The sounds guide the party a short way to the east until the passage connects to a north-south corridor of old brick. It appears that this tunnel and its inhabitants were hidden away from the castle dungeon by a secret door, now standing open.

The north-south passage runs around 80-100' (25-30 meters) in either direction. The south passage ends in fresh rubble as a result of the collapse overhead. The north way eventually turns east.

Following this route, the sounds grow louder and clearer. Ferocious beasts snarl. Metal clashes against metal. Human voices (or close enough) shout violent commands or shriek in terror and pain. As you near the corner, an Imperial man rounds it in as swift a limp as he can manage with two chitinous javelins lodged in his back and terrible injury to his head caused by a blunt object.

Trouble snarls and snaps at the figure, but Thael is in position to call it off if she desires. The man is heedless of the danger the hound represents, regardless. "Goblin-elfs!" he slurs at Thael, waving at her to run back the way she came. Svendr knows that this is an inaccurate but common term used to describe the subterranean and bestial falmer.

Thaelestra does hold Trouble back, figuring the man will carry the message back to Hengis much like he did here.

"Indicate you surrender and ye'll live." She says to the fleeing form, turning back to the hole.

She looks down at the Mastiff and then back at the hole and with a sigh walks forward. "I can hear him now boy, 'Ooch! We cannae leave the place and go hunting in the mountains lass when we've left these people sitting on a pile of ants now can we?' and then it will be days later. Best be done with it now, right?"

A happy look lends all the necessary confirmation Thael needs as she heads the way the man came, dragging her boot a bit to draw an arrow for her friends and firing up the light in her ring.

Hengis re-examines Kyle and judges him fit for action.

"Ye should be right as rain tomorrow. This'll dae ye fer the time bein'."

When the stumbling form of the wounded Imperial appears, the other two dogs will surely give warning, before drawing back into the shadows to either side ready to pounce. When he sees the state of the man Hengis gives them a mental command not to attack him. Then he'll scan the man's thoughts for a better look at the horrors he has recently faced.

I'm guessing they won't be too dissimilar to those we encountered in the vampire's lair at Markarth.

I'm going to assume it's at this point that Svendr puts in his bit above, so... he'll tend to the worst of the man's injuries, and give him a Cure Light Wounds from his wand, while replying to Sven...

"Aye, that could be an effective means to end at least one set of enemies doon here. Might no' be sae guid against the other one, though. I'd prefer we take a closer look and see if we cannae conspire tae make the battle as even as possible, eh?" :eh:

"Besides, this one must have already got past Thael, which means she's in there somewhere with the falmer and their creatures and whatever's left of the legion. We're no gaein' tae let her have all the fun, are we?" :eh:

The others know him well enough to recognise the concern underlying his light-hearted words.

Hengis tells the legionary to head back the way we came and to give himself up to the people up there. He says to tell them Hengis told him to surrender to Uuth and he should be well-treated.

Then we'll press on, with a little more urgency now. Two dogs up front, then Hengis and Kyle, then Sven and Qadir.

Incidentally, Hengis has already named his dogs ("Brume", "Smog" and "Haar", see OOC post from 8th Jan (p263)), but it's quite possible that Thael has never heard him use those names so she wouldn't necessarily know about them. "Trouble" will do quite nicely for the time being.
