Heading to play in the Modern GP this weekend. Finally buying into a Pioneer deck. The mono-Green ramp one because it's only $100 if I share my Tron collection cards with it my identity might just be Big Mana In Every Format. My Glint-Eye Nephilim deck has actually shaped up very well. The first few games were such letdowns I was considering taking it apart but with some more tweaking it's turned into a pretty fun self-discard deck. It's still a rattling Rube Goldberg machine but once I get the pieces into place the deck's got some big turns. Bought a DEX supreme chest. It's very large and heavy, but very sturdy. The lid is not going anywhere. More importantly it hold all my decks, my (double sleeved) Plane collection, my Contraption set, my Bang set, deck-specific token sets, and my dry-erase blank tokens in one container rather than having to keep up with three or four boxes.
Edit: While I still considered it a Krenko deck my goblin deck had Wort, Boggart Auntie as the Commander. It allowed me access to better aristocrat effects and I could get back building blocks from the graveyard.
Unsanctioned brings me great joy to see. I think every other year is probably a good rate for these releases. And I think that not having to stretch things into a draftable set lets them save up more jokes and ideas that wouldn’t fly in black bordered Magic. Plus the play test cards out of Mystery Boosters sort of fill that niche anyway.
It’ll just be a real test of will for me not to immediately rip the decks apart for the legendaries and to start making Commander decks without playing a proper game of Unsanctioned.
Also it brings me great joy that Old Fogey and Blast From the Past are printed with the original frame.
EDIT: Since Unstable had the five faction leaders as ally-colored legendaries and Unsanctioned has five enemy-colored legendaries now I’m considering making a silver bordered Smash Up box, where each legendary has a 49 card deck and they’re all house ruled to have Partner. Each game you get two random decks and shuffle them together to create a 100 card Commander deck.
