Random MtG Thoughts

Postby tombombodil » Thu Jul 16, 2015 11:20 am

I want one of these and so I made one!

Question, I'm working on a deck that needs more tools vs Ux Control.

I'm looking for cards that fulfill the following criteria:
- Can be vast with white and/or no more than 1 Red mana
- Can be a "threat" in the traditional sense
- Doesn't get blown out by lightning bolt
- Has a CMC less than 5

Well, I hit up the Gatherer and looked for:

Does contain Modern
Does Not contain Black, Blue, or Green
Does contain Creature
CMC is <= 5
Toughness is >3

And what I came up with after looking at the results is: Brimaz, King of Oreskos, Celestial Archon, Baneslayer Angel, Thundermaw Hellkite, Manor Gargoyle, Hero of Bladehold. There are also some decent Metalcraft creatures in this range and also you have access to Heliod, Purphoros, and Iroas if you think you'll be able to have the Devotion going. Also there are Masticores if you can draw cards.

Heliod seems gud. Ditto Baneslayer, though with other removal and bounce 5 mana is a little steep.

To the thought bubble!

If you are an experienced M:tG player you should definitely follow RoboRosewater on Twitter.

Basically a PhD candidate in computer science took a recurrent neural network and fed it all the text on Magic cards, to train the network to know the writing style of Magic cards. The networks know nothing about the content of magic cards, only the style in which the card text is written. This produces strange but workable cards, or completely hilarious gibberish e.g. Tark's Flowstork: WUUB, Instant. Cast Tark's Flowstork only as a sorcery.

What's also really amusing is any time the RNN needs to put reminder text (Reminder text looks like this) on a card. It knows what reminder text is, it knows that some abilities have reminder text, but it doesn't know what actually goes there, so it ends up throwing one line from a half-dozen different reminder texts into the space.

I've never really been able to get into MtG, but even I can tell that this is really neat:

Magic: the Gathering is Turing Complete
"Space is blue, and birds fly through it." - Werner Heisenberg

Cookie dough, ergo sum.

I have bought exactly three booster packs (on three separate occasions) of Modern Masters 2015 so far.

First rare: Etched Monstrosity. :problem:
Second rare: Mystic Snake.
Third rare: Tarmogoyf.

Card Kingdom is currently giving 136$ store credit for MM Tarmogofy. Got a few pricey EDH cards you've been on the fence about?

This is MM2 - they're "only" offering 117 for the edition I pulled. That said, I may let it appreciate for a bit. My first thought was to turn it into a box of Battle for Zendikar when that comes out in the fall.

But yeah, I've thought about swapping it for (for example) a Kozilek, a Crucible of Worlds, and a bunch of $5-$10 cards (Chord of Calling, etc.)

That's also not a bad idea. Either way you just turned 3, 4 dollar bills into a hundred dollar bill

Also this is just me speculating, but I can't imagine the price of goyf is going to fluctuate much in the near future, and the trade value if the MM2 version is likely to dip slightly after the initial grab that all the big sites make upon release of a new set, or if enough get opened so as to actually meaningfully increase the supply of the big dumb jerk.

But I've been wrong before, and in fact usually am, so take that all with a grain of salt ;)
