Real stories weird enough for your game

Postby clintmemo » Wed Jun 10, 2009 10:54 am

I sometimes run cross news articles that are strange enough to be game material.

Here's one I found today.
"Stalin wanted to make super-human soldiers by crossing humans and apes."

I remember the Monster Quest episode on the History Channel where they talked about this.

"Get your hands off me, you damn dirty Ape!"

Yeah, this one I've read about before. The injuries and what forced them to leave their tent are the most puzzling. My guess is that a bear entered their camp at night. This caused a panic, with the victims running in all directions. A later snowstorm reduced visibility drastically and since most of them ran off in utter panic, they were unable to find their way back to the campsite. As for the injuries, the only thing that seems likely would be that some of the group ran into some steep terrain and sustained injuries from falls. I think the radiation is a red herring - that seems to have been added after the fact.

The nakedness or near nakedness of many of the victims is not surprising. Extreme hypothermia can result in something called Paradoxical Undressing, where victims feel overheated even though they're actually dying from being too cold. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypothermia#Paradoxical_undressing This has a lot to do with the way the body works in sensing cold and heat - what the body can sense is actually rapidity of heat gain and loss.* When a sudden surge of blood flow to the extremities occurs after the muscles restricting blood vessels to keep the body core heated become exhausted, the victim feels a sudden huge heat gain in the limbs. If you ever have this happen to you, you should know that you probably have only minutes remaining to get warm or you will die.

* This is why metal feels colder or hotter than other surfaces at the same temperature (it conducts heat more readily), and why the hot/cold water trick can make each hand feel different in the same room-temperature water.

That doesn't change the fact that this would be a seriously freaking awesome supernatural thriller game setting.

The Coast to Coast AM website has a section for odd news articles on it's front page, and changes them daily.

Homeless camp under the 10 Freeway in Los Angeles

An honest-to-god modern dungeon--the main area is about the size of two gymnasiums side-by-side, while the perimeter has areas hollowed out of concrete for individual living spaces. To get in, the homeless were going up a ladder, through an opening under the bridge, under a grating, along a ledge and down another ladder--there's no lights, so squatters would use lighters or flashlights to find their way. The possibilities for an urban horror game, ala White Wolf, are staggering....
You say "wankery" like it's a bad thing.

I first read about this in Uncle John Bathroom Reader. I am still trying to find a way to fit it into a game.
