Re: Pathfinder Advanced Class Debate

Wow, so lots to respond to. *cough* play style *cough* Completely right. But it’s a fun discussion. Would I say it's an RPG? Yeah. Would I say story is a focus of Pathfinder's rules? Not in a million years. I am right there with you. I am not trying to say that the rules are mostly about RP, but I f...

Re: Pathfinder Advanced Class Debate

Argentum, it seems like you are falling into their trap. I believe they are basing their argument on the (false) premise that the game is only what exists in the written rules, i.e. if there is no defined mechanic for something, it is not a part of the game. We all know that the game is not just wh...

Re: Pathfinder Advanced Class Debate

Modules are not a part of the game's rules, that's how. hmm...well I disagree with you, modules are the best way to see the intentions of the game designers as how they envision a game being run. But its a minor point and not that important to my argument. If Pathfinder is solely a wargame and does...

Re: Pathfinder Advanced Class Debate

After rereading some of the posts, I think it might be good to tease apart a few threads as i seem them. We seem to be jumping around a bit and I think this might help clarify the debate. I see at least these following thread. 1. Skills are vastly outclass skills and therefore magic using classes ar...

Re: Pathfinder Advanced Class Debate

Its kinda funny, this discussion seems to have similar stances and the analytic v. continental debates within philosophy. That has nothing to do with the discussion at hand really, but its kinda interesting to me.

Re: Pathfinder Advanced Class Debate

Oh and I am not trying to say the Pathfinder is solely about roleplaying or that it is mechanically highly affected by roleplaying. I agree that the game leans more towards dice rolling. But it still is a roleplaying game, not chess, and does expect/reward/ takes into consideration roleplaying. I am...

Re: Pathfinder Advanced Class Debate

Now, you're getting into the realm of the setting acknowledging the mage is the dangerous one, the one to be accounted for above all others, and the muggles aren't really worth accounting for. And when the world acknowledges that the mages are the protagonists and the muggles are the sidekicks, wel...

Re: Pathfinder Advanced Class Debate

-this lead to my belief that rules are what place limits on the story as well as interjecting randomness. The story is the base and the rules inform the story. Yes for some people the rules are the core and the story is dressing around the rules. It sounds like you are of this second camp. I prefer...

Re: Pathfinder Advanced Class Debate

So i wrote a long response and lost it. It was brilliant, well worded with awesome examples and would have convinced anyone who read it of my point (sarcasm). A bit frustrated by the this turn of events but ill give you the much abbreviated version that does not explain things as clearly. VV great p...
