As a long time player and character recylcer, when I became a DM I had a strong desire to make a campaign which spanned the planes, so it could go anywhere at any time and pick up any characters any players wanted to play. Spelljammer fit the bill. Yes, I shamelessly like Spelljammer. ...except for the hippos with guns, which can be easily ignored or forgotton. I think guns are generally a mistake for fantasy settings, since it takes the fantasy out and makes armor and bows obsolete, I'd rather use rods of magic missles, since wizards won't mass produce them and thus maintains game balance. I also thought the spaceships being sea vessels was totally cheezy, but these people are traveling to other prime material planes don't want everybody to know they are aliens and they don't want to leave a vessel worth a kingdom behind while they walk a hundred miles, they want to be able to travel within the plane, so a craft which looks like a boat actually makes sense, especially if you keep the campaign at sea level.

Pirates are cool, planar travel is cool, so what's the problem? Just ignore the hippos with guns. :)

Needs more tinker gnomes though. ;)
