Regarding Chad’s point near the end about taking things too seriously, I’d put it to him that people play games to have fun. As adults, between work, family, other hobbies, and the sad necessities of life, time is at a premium. Setting aside coordinated time together is a commitment.

John wants to maximize his fun/time ratio. Is that taking gaming too seriously, or taking seriously the balance of his personal schedule? I would argue the latter.

I agree. Obviously everyone has a different idea of what they want out of an RPG. Those we like, we see as important. Those we don’t like, we see as overemphasized. So just as John’s interest in rules could be seen as taking the game seriously, so could Chad’s interest in focused roleplay. In truth, neither are. People have limited free time (as you noted), and it’s difficult to align that among a group of adults, so we all want the most out of what we have.

A good way to have the characters get captured is you open the scene with the characters having been captured and then go back a day. This way the players an control how they get captured.

If your campaign is so plot dependent on those particular PCs, then I think something has been wrong.
It’s fine to have world events that can involve the PCs, or personal quest stories that speak to one PC, but the whole campaign should never rely on the survival of one particular PC. That’s just poor planning.
