Episode 269 – pre-game
by Dan Repperger

* (1:08) This year we’ll be attending San Diego Comic Con instead of Gen Con.  However, there may still be some FtB community-sponsored events at Gen Con.  Expect details on the activities at both conventions soon!

* (1:46) John is a bad, bad man.  Adding romance to a game while also dealing with its consequences.

* (16:18) Stepping back when you’re too busy to GM.  Our temporary switch from Battletech to Dresden.  Non-consensual changes to character — crossing the “golden box”.

* (30:40) Questions to contemplate prior to the game.  Making sure there’s a common understanding about certain elements such as lethality, plot direction, and the usefulness of various archetypes.

Hosts: Beth, Dan, John, Julia

PROUD MOMENT: I can’t believe I got Castillo Blanco right. I don’t speak a bit of Spanish and just guessed how to say White Castle.

PROUD MOMENT: I ran my pronunciation past a coworker from China, and he confirmed my attempt at Ao Guang was almost perfect.

CRINGE MOMENT: I can’t believe we forgot one of the most important pre-game questions! What house rules do you use to modify the system? That can have a pretty significant impact on what sort of character you play.

You know you’re in for a fun listen when he episode has both John and Beth.

I wasn’t really feeling the main topic though. Wasn’t it mentioned on the episodes about lethality, archetypes, etc that they should be discussed before the game?

They missed the other side of the question on lethality. It may only come up in Superhero games, but one of the first questions there is whether your characters will kill or not.

Since you are going to Comic Con, you clearly need to check out the Firefly reunion panel. :P
