The Hosting of Fear the Boot
by Dan Repperger

I wanted to give you guys an update on the current hosting situation on Fear the Boot.  Let me start by saying that no one is leaving the show, nor is anyone new joining.  However, if you take the six regular hosts (Chad, Chris, Dan, John, Pat, and Wayne) along with our alternates (Johann and Karla), that’s obviously eight total people.  Putting that many people on a single episode would be impractical to record and a nightmare to listen to.

The way we’re going to address this is by returning Fear the Boot to the description it’s carried in the RSS feed since Episode 1.

Fear the Boot is an irreverent, round table discussion of tabletop role playing games. In this weekly show we debate game-related issues, offer advice for improving your game, and poke fun at the hobby. Our cast changes a little from show to show, but we always assemble a group of dynamic individuals with divergent views, guaranteeing you will hear several perspectives on everything we discuss.

For each show, we will have 3 – 5 hosts present, drawn from the list given above.  That flexibility accomplishes two things.  First, we can make sure we’ve tapped the hosts with the most interest or expertise on a given subject.  Second, it allows the remaining hosts to take some weeks off to spend with family or pursue other projects, such as Fear the Con, Skies of Glass, Epoch of Rysos, and Bloodmoon Goblins.

I don’t expect this change to have any significant impact on the show.  All of the hosts will still be appearing on the show and active on the forums.  However, I wanted to explain in advance why the staffing will shift in seemingly random fashion from week to week.

Don’t make us pick our favorites. What was that parable about King Solomon’s bicycle?

Needs more Dawn.

As long as Dan, Chris, and Pat are 3 of the 3-5, I’m good ;)

Do what you guys need to do. after 200+ episodes you have cart blanc for what you feel is best for the podcast. Having a large rotating pool of hosts mitigates the chances of burnout. I honestly think you guys click well enough as a social group where you can make the best out of a diversity of opinion and experience.

I love that you guys have so many to choose from/have available, your current mix is both entertaining and pretty diverse.

Does this mean that Dan will FINALLY be able to take a for-real break?

Some hosts grate on me more than other hosts. Thank god Dan is the one constant that keeps the seething cauldron of bile, vitriol and chaos from boiling over and infecting the world. Okay, perhaps I am being a bit hysterical, but I like the alternating format and I appreciate the fresh voices and perspectives, especially the female perspective, which I feel is woefully lacking in the hobby.

I gotta say, it’s interesting that you need to explain this once more after Dan already explained it to us in episode 60. Of course, some of the newer listeners might not have heard of that, but the fluctuations in (ironically) fluctuation in the hosting are probably going to continue. Explaining this every time your hosting schedule gets more or less regular is probably a good thing because you only need to do it once every year or couple of years, but it will get repetitive.

I certainly don’t want to get in the habit of saying this every time something in the arrangement occurs. But as you noted, it’s been a few years since we’ve really said this, and I know we’ve had people pick up the show in that time. I’ve also learned the hard way that the human mind abhors a vacuum. If something changes and I don’t explain why, it’s only a matter of time before I end up being asked and giving the same explanation anyway.

With the return of of some… I’m finding myself screaming “Shut Up Already.” The amount of cross talk and talking over others has gone way up. I’m sure this makes Dan’s edit work more timely as well.. So in a nutshell welcome back to the mic John but shut-up already. Let others complete their comments and try to cut back on the cross talk. Great Job on Bloodmoon Goblins BTW.
