I find my character ideas never totally survive first contact with a campaign. It takes me 2-3 games to really settle into a character, no matter what my plans were at the beginning. Sometimes they change very slightly, and other times quite radically.
For myself I find I can recycle character ideas (though I very rarely do) because my initial character concept always morphs once it encounters the ideas/characters of others and the campaign/scenario. The group dynamic also plays a big role.
Campaign ideas is another can of worms altogether.
Great episode as always. Almost 200 in and still the best around, truly impressive.
I’ve used old ideas to good effect many times in my time both as a gamer and as a game designer.
I’ve reinvented old characters that seemed kinda meh previously. Sometimes, combining ideas from two so-so characters will produce a stronger character in the end. Using old plots can be fun, but beware going through the same module several times. I went through my favorite module about 5 times, and I got sick of it. It took away what was special about it.
As a game designer, I’ve had to look at old ideas and take them “from drool to cool.” Tying together conflicting canon can be fun, particularly as you look at something from a different point of view. Taking monsters that are goofy and putting a new twist on them can be fun too.
Give it a shot. You may find there is much worth looking at again.
