Bonus Episode 30 – Saturday morning cartoons
by Dan Repperger
I was hoping to run a regular episode this week, but Christmas happened. Since I couldn’t get enough hosts, I dug into the archive of unreleased stuff and pulled out a bonus episode we did with Mikey Mason.

I’m sort of surprised you guys didn’t mention MASK (which has NOT stood the test of time), or the original Fox X-Men or something of that nature.
Great show, I’d like to hear a bit more expounding on what makes some of these cartoons stand the test of time.
I was always a Disney guy myself. Ducktales and Rescue Rangers were my two favorites. I’ve never really liked superheroes and usually I didn’t like the cartoons that had human-like people in them. I wanted my cartoons over the top.
Which is also why my favorites were always the old 60s Disney shorts and Looney Tunes and all that stuff. And if something still holds up it’s those. I can throw in a DVD with those old shorts and still laugh. I’m not sure if they ever aired on Saturday mornings though. Saturday mornings were usually first filled with some weird Soviet fairy tale cartoons (Some ice princess thing and Nils Holgersson comes to mind, though that may have been Japanese. I don’t know) and then the commercial channels took over with Disney and after that came all the superhero/human stuff that I didn’t care for. (Spiderman, Biker Mice from Mars, Captain Planet, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes)
I did like Turtles though. Until it was dubbed into Finnish which I didn’t understand and didn’t sound as cool as English. (This is probably the reason why I didn’t like “human” cartoons because they were boring to watch and it’s not like I understood what they said when I was nine anyway since both my English and Finnish skills were pretty low. So I wanted weird action like you get in Looney Tunes.)
I think Wayne briefly mentioned the X-Men when they brought up Spider-Man.
I remember mask. I had a couple toys even. I didn’t think anyone else remembered that.
I also LOVED the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes cartoon. Of course I still love the movie too.
They have just finally started releasing X-Men on DVD. They still don’t have any seasons of Spiderman on DVD though only short 3-5 episode collections.
School House Rock, baby!
Thanks for reminding me of Battle of the Planets!
School House Rock Rocks! I have the entire collection on DVD. My daughter loves them as much as my wife and I.
Voltron was actually a dumbed-down, edited-to-heck Americanized version of… I wanna say it was an anime called Go Lion but I’m not sure. The original anime was too dark, deep, etc, in the eyes of American producers, and thus we ended up with Voltron. I haven’t seen the original anime myself and only barely remember the show, but as a kid I know I loved heck out of it (and haven’t tried watching it since… probably all for the best). For me, the cartoon that I did go back to try and watch as an adult that made me go “WTF this is utter garbage” was Thundercats. *shudder* Amusing that it got a mention here, but then it issss utter crap. xD
