Episode 23 – common GMing mistakes
by Dan Repperger

We kick off the episode with a story about our trip to a hibachi restaurant.  When it’s time to discuss roleplaying games, we begin with a look at what sort of person wants to be a GM.  We then work through a list of common GMing mistakes and how to avoid them.

Hosts: Adam, Chad, Dan, Dawn

Short gaming story about a bad GM: Our Vampire The Masquerade group had, through very good preparation, absolutely BLOWN through an adventure and was about to get a LOT of power. We took down the big bad guy quickly so the GM had him vanish for a second and then come back ten times as powerful. Mr. Big Bad returned and permanently destroyed 80% of the party.

Having accomplished this, he pulled out a Deus Ex Machina NPC character to save the party and take out the bad guy. So, not only had he taken away our hard-fought victory, he only allowed the others to live (well, survive) via the worst GM fudge. Perhaps he only meant to add a bit more drama and up the challenge. In that case, though, it’s not right to KILL everyone, ha!

IMO, if you haven’t figured out what you’re going to do if the players actually GET a prize, the prize should never be available even in theory.
