Post Why Smart People Are Stupid
Quote:
Here’s a simple arithmetic question: A bat and ball cost a dollar and ten cents. The bat costs a dollar more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

The vast majority of people respond quickly and confidently, insisting the ball costs ten cents. This answer is both obvious and wrong. (The correct answer is five cents for the ball and a dollar and five cents for the bat.)

When people face an uncertain situation, they don’t carefully evaluate the information or look up relevant statistics. Instead, their decisions depend on a long list of mental shortcuts, which often lead them to make foolish decisions. These shortcuts aren’t a faster way of doing the math; they’re a way of skipping the math altogether. Asked about the bat and the ball, we forget our arithmetic lessons and instead default to the answer that requires the least mental effort.

I got that question wrong, but the lily pond one right. Not sure what that says about me.

My initial mental response to the question: "Well, if one costs a dollar, and the other costs ten cents, that's only ninety cents difference, so that can't be it."

My initial answer to the lily pad question was 47 days.

I already knew the answer to this question, though. I've read/heard variations on it more than once.

This article overgeneralizes. "Most people" instead of "we" would be a good start.

One might also argue that people who design questions like this in the first place would not, having created them, fall for them. They must then be outside this universal "we."

I don't think this demonstrates that smart people are stupid. I think it demonstrates that some people can be fooled by 'trick' questions, but I'd say that the test of whether someone is smart might be how easily or often they can see past the trick.

I got 'em both right. :D

By and large, it's a test of attention to detail, really. I got them too, and I don't consider myself especially smart (despite what I normally say). I do, however, tend to focus on little details ... often to the detriment of the larger picture, which is part of the reason I don't consider myself especially smart.

I got that one and the lilypad with no problem. My first thought in both cases was the obvious wrong answer, but it was immediately followed up with no, that's not right. It would have been interesting to try this without knowing the context of the questions.

I got both right. In each case, I didn't even consider the "obvious" wrong answer until I saw that other people thought that, at which point I had to work through the illogic of how they got there.

My brain just doesn't work that way. Not that I don't make tons of bad decisions, I just reach them via different channels than the ones those questions tried to lead people down.

I got both of them right, and both are easy. That's not to dismiss the actual research - I've read some of the studies, and they appear to be completely legitimate - but the questions really only seem to indicate that some generally smart people are just terrible at math.

I got them both right, but knowing the context always helps. I often jump to the wrong obvious answer and only when I stop and think do I get things like that correct.

I also question the author's definition of "smart." I know lots of people that blew away their SAT's and such but make horrible decisisons in real life. I also wonder about people who did well onthe math portion of the SAT vs the English portion.
