Season 2 of Sherlock is airing on PBS here on Sunday nights.
Last night was "Baskerville."

OMG, that show is good. I think if they had an episode with those two in character sitting around arguing about what to watch on TV, I'd be glued to the set.

And maybe it's different in California, but around here Sherlock Holmes comes on three times a year on PBS, between Antiques Roadshow and a program about local events. Community airs in primetime on NBC the same night as 30 Rock and the Office.

Wow. I watch a lot more TV now that I've got a baby.
No, you're right, I failed my check against pop culture lore; BC has turned up in a number of things recently that I've been exposed to by way of various internet venues, but Americans on the whole aren't as yet aware of him.

I still support his casting in this film, but I needed to have taken a different tact.

I don't want rehashes of the '80s films.

Considering the difference in age of the crew in the 80's movies, and the Star Trek 2010 crew I don't think you have anything to fear.
If anything were re-hashed it would be the TOS episode Space Seed.

I liked everything about the first (new) Trek movie other than the time-travel plot elements.....it's been used so much in the sci-fi genre that I just don't enjoy going there anymore.

And destroying Vulcan was uncool.

As far as rehashing Khan?.....I'm totally from Missouri on that decision.

Unless, of course, they travel back in time and pluck Ricardo Montalban for the role again.

Khan wasn't such a bad guy until he was stranded on a world where the entire climate shifted. Bringing back Khan would be pre-encounter, while he's still in space aboard the Botany Bay. The surprise twist, especially with the new cast, is that Khan could become an ally against whoever the bad guys are. He's a genetically superior soldier... send him after the bad guy and the whole 'rule the world' thing disappears.

In my tabletop Star Trek game, the climactic finale involved chasing a Romulan time traveler back to the Eugenics Wars era. The Romulan passed disruptor technology on to Khan during his attempt to conquer the Earth. The crew was able to defeat Khan and the Romulan craft, though they lost their ship in the process.

They hijacked the SS Botany Bay and forced a launch, then went into hibernation. The final scene was of them being woken up in the TOS era by Kirk et al.

I'll bet the movie will have elements of both. I'm hoping it is not a 2 hour version of Space Seed with lots of 'splosions. If it is, it will suck.

I don't buy the "white washing" argument in this instance.

Abrahms has firmly established this new Trek to be based in sensationalism; with that in mind, what you need is a really big name of someone younger and hot right now in the minds of the American Viewing public. Somehow casting, say, Danny Pudi, while more ethnically "correct" wouldn't have nearly the same draw.

That's the definition of white washing. It's no different than the Caucasian-centric actor shortlist for the aborted 'Akira' film.

As a side note, last time, he wasn't played by an Indian either, but by a portrayed by a tan Mexican with a rich, Latin accent. (who's incredibly impressive pecks, were, in fact, quite real)

Benecio Del Toro was rumored for this role. He isn't a Sikh or Indian either but I don't doubt he could play off a decent Ricardo Montalban-quoting-Herman Melville pastiche. And he's a person of color. While John Cho isn't Japanese, he wasn't a terrible choice for Sulu.

I've seen Cumberbatch in roles other than Sherlock and he's a fine actor. But he's so quintessentially British in build and performance that if he wore a bowler hat he would be a living stereotype.

I liked the casting of the previous film. They resembled the original cast in both look and peformance but they were able to bring their own thing to the characters so that it didn't feel like a big-budget SNL sketch. This is not even the same ballpark in terms of casting.

Maybe that's the point. Maybe Kahn in this version in a british white guy - afterall, they are always the villains in these movies anyway.
