Getting away from the chess debate, I'd recommend Hive.

After I got Settlers and we played it with my in-laws a few times, my wife has become quite the board game addict, always on the hunt for good games for just the two of us to play.
Here are favorites in my house-hold
-Carcassonne
-Small World
-Lost Cities
-Citadels
-The Haunting House
-Rivals of Catan
-Nuts!
-Gubs
-Zombie Dice
-Last Night on Earth

Summoner Wars is an amazing 2 player game also. If you get the Master Set it comes with 6 factions. It's also expandable with more factions that you can purchase individually. Unlimited game replayability

Tsuro plays quite well for a two player game and it's quick. You could easily play four or five matches in an hour with just two. It also nicely expands up to eight players when you have a larger game night.

If you're curious, Will Wheton recently spotlighted this game on Tabletop, his You Tube show.

I want mention Arkham Horror again as a good 2-player... except that each player technically needs to play 2 investigators instead of just 1. With only 2 investigators, you are almost always eaten by the elder gods... but the game is definitely beatable with 4.

- Arkham Horror
- Awful Green Things from Outer Space
- Catan card game
- Dominion

I haven't played it, but my uncle & aunt enjoy Mansions of Madness (Arkham spin-off game).

I bought the box 2 times. One for a friend, the other for the office. The rules and cards make sense to me and they express the theme/world nicely. It's not perfect, but very fun. Also, I'm glad it's a LCG. I'm done with collecting cards. It got expensive for me.

My son just walked in with Zombie Dice and Carcassonne. Yep, I raised him right. :-)

Just watched the latest episode of TableTop and the featured game was Castle Panic. It's co-op play for 1-6 players so it sounds like it would be a fine addition to the two player game category. If you choose carefully on Amazon, you can get it for $25ish and pay no shipping.

Ordered the game for myself since I like solo games, but I'm sure it will end up in my son's growing board game library.
