Yul reaches out to Box, but finds no consciousness in his body. Amazingly, it seems to have transferred into the jewel at the door's center.

He manages to establish contact and asks the modron whether he is alright.

"We are well," comes the response.

"Insufficient data," it responds. "Define location: 'In There.' 'We' is us; a Quadrone. You called this unit 'Yudumbox.' Query: Have you forgotten us?"

:problem: Yul relays the response to Morlan.
"Next question Morlan?"

"Burning times," Joshua curses, "'Box is trapped in that gem?"

He thinks  Smash it? Touch it and join him? Actually...
a plan forms

He casts Detect Magic from his wand looking for more information about the gem. Then he reaches into his pocket for the gem Fertus gave him.

This was an academy for Red Wizards after all. Perhaps touching his gem to the larger one is the key.

(I cast Detect Magic in the Gate Room, I assume nothing showed up?)

Joshua's magic detection around the gates revealed a latent aura of magic, but too little to examine fully.

His examination of the jewel in the door is more fruitful, showing the presence of divination, illusion, necromancy, and transmutation magic.

He touches his jewel to the one in the door, careful not to brush against it himself. There does not seem to be any result.

For Joshua's next experiment he removes the enchanted amphora and touches that against the gem.

:wtf:

"Er... well, tell him that his spirit seems to be inside the gem on the door. Then ask him if he can get back into his own body. Ask if he can see or sense anything where he is, such as what lies beyond or any kind of mechanism or even a route or path. And ask if he is alone in there."

The amphora has no effect on the door. But I had to think long and hard about that one.

Yul passes Morlan's questions along.

Box responds, "Define: Gem; Door. We do not understand. Nor do we understand what is meant by returning into our own body."

"Yul," it thinks. "Are you not well? You seem to be confused. We have remained here with the Pentadrone since returning to Mechanus."

Morlan considers.

"This is most peculiar. Joshua's investigation suggests that the door employs illusion magic in some way, and Box appears to believe he is back on Mechanus. Those two things fit a pattern... but for one thing. Modrons are immune to illusions. I recall that from our visit to Mechanus, isn't that right Dunn?"

"Which would imply that either Box's spirit actually has been transported back to Mechanus, and the door acts as some kind of inter-planar conduit... or something else that is beyond me at the moment."
