Re: HBO's A Game of Thrones
I kind of like some of Daenerys`s stuff in the books more so around the freeing of the slaves ectr. But then Martin goes into this swing about do noting, think agonize do noting cycle and it gets annoying more then anything, *Glares at the last book*
I do agree the TV one is more enjoyable but the last show definitely confirmed my feeling that they should switch around less. Especially if they aren't going to show anything. I would rather see some bigger chunks that have more substance then the some what ADD flashing about (Although mostly that's with Daenerys)
I also find my self really almost dreading the Red Wedding, it was one of the moments i almost threw the book. Its also the moment i stopped caring that much about any of the characters.

 HBO's A Game of Thrones
I had a similarly strong reaction to that incident, but in retrospect, it struck me as something startlingly original from an author. And I both like and respect the choice.

I don't know, I like danny's story in the books. She constantly grows stronger and more confident, becoming a somewhat competent leader, until she decides she's going to be a queen. The only problem, she's never seen anyone rule. She's had advice from warriors and watched generals lead since her wedding, but never had to understand bureaucracy. It's a humbling lesson as all her mistakes and people she's pissed off come back to bite her. We get to watch her succeed epicly against some people it's really easy to hate, followed by watching her fail in the nest of snakes and spiders that is courtly politics, where we really aren't sure who is and who isn't evil. It mimic's Ned story in a way. I don't know, I'm rarely bored reading her parts.

I, too, hated that event, tho I was ultimately ok with it as it followed intuitively from what went before; I would argue that there was an almost Serling like irony to what transpired.

I think part of it is Ian's performance, something that enriches the show but the books couldn't have added, like inflection, expression and visual storytelling that makes him seem like more than just and expository voice; some of it, at least for me, was his exposition as a character: in the books, we don't learn about his backstory and pathos until book 2, whereas in the series we learn it by halfway through season 1. Anything I'd have to add about why I like him are things that are true in both media. I like both versions, but agree the TV character is more compelling. The TV Jorah is more charismatic than the novel Jorah; the latter is described as physically unattractive.

I initially hated the event too; but afterwards, I just reconciled it to the overall story. However, that event, following the treatment of Ned, effectively severed a connection I had with my favorite characters. I see all of them as pretty much hopeless, now.
The characters operate in the fantasy equivalent of prison camp..... they can choose life, or maintaining a semblance of morality .... GRR Martin isn't allowing anyone to have both.

And not one I think I like as either a character or a person. They need to resolve quite a few issues on Essos before she can even attempt to come back. If she boards a ship before the end of the next book I think I'll will be very disappointed.

Re: HBO's A Game of Thrones
Now don’t get me wrong its not that I don’t care at all about characters, its just that there is the constant awareness in the back of my mind that Martin will run up, fart in my face and run away giggling if I like any character to much. *End of the latest book, I feel like he literally did that* I also think it’s a cliffhanger and there will be some event with the red Priestess but that neither here nor there.
I do have to wounder how they will deal with the epic slog of unimportance that is Feast of Crows. I mean honestly most of that whole book can be described as "not all that important and nobody really cared"
