That's a good point. Get them into roleplaying and making interesting game decisions before you just wall-of-rules them.

Start with games that don't have a ton of rules?

A highly valid tactic, one that is tired and true. I cut my DM teeth on QAGS and stuck with that system the first two years I DMed. Though as an engineer I came to love crunch and math. My games tend to be part experiment in how various game mechanics influence narrative.

Unfortunately night court involves very little impassioned argument and very much leaning against a wall and waiting.

Fortunately that makes taking texts and calls quite practical.
