If you want to start a bar, the best source of funding is to start with the money you need already in hand. Sorry, but that's just the way it goes. Speaking of which, I might be going in on a bar.

That makes me wonder if you can start a kickstarter to raise money for it. A 'geek' bar (whatever that is) can get a kickstarter, can a 'normal' bar get a kickstarter or does it have to be strange or interesting in some way.

I hate saying "Irish bar" since it calls to mind Dbags talking about how it is an "autentic" pub built in Dublin last week and shipped over brick by brick. But a good friend of mine sold his bar about 8 years ago and we want to make a new bar like that. It started out in 68 as an Irish bar, as in it was full of blue collar Irish, English, and Scotts but soon filed up with their American born friends and relatives. Typical Irish American bar... but I need to German it up some. So pretty much a dive bar with good booze and lots punk rock on the jukebox. A real jukebox, not an interwebz one.

A buddy of mine is looking to buy a bar and called me to get in on it since I have a little bit of money and some experience. We already have what I feel to be the important parts, experienced kitchen manager, experienced bar manager, plenty of honest waitstaff and good cooks, and the money. Location is our biggest hold up. We need a good location near or in Corktown (Detroit).

The other guy has the money to do it by himself, but I have more bar experience and obviously it mitigates his risk if I go in. I don't want to risk my money, but I think I can get a really good staff together that I know I can work with. I can get guest bartenders in who will bring a ton of people in pretty much guaranteeing a packed house on the early weekends when you really need it. I can get the events in and have connections with the other bars around there that I can leverage for SIn nights, pub crawls, and shuttles.
