Post Marvel Heroic Roleplaying: Nightmares of Futures Past
I'd started a game on rpol.net that didn't get enough people to keep going. I'm going to try this one there and see if it grabs more people.

Nightmares of Futures Past

The anti-mutant powder keg had been slowly accumulating until 1988, when Magneto's Brotherhood assassinated Senator Robert Kelly. The explosion in anti-mutant hysteria altered the landscape forever. Mutants and suspected mutants were harassed, tortured, and killed throughout the country. Seizing the opportunity, the sitting President pushed through Anti-mutant legislation. Beginning with registration of Mutant and Anamalous humans, the government projects eventually sprouted both the Sentinel program and a series of Mutant Internment Centers to separate the dangers of Mutation from the purity of Humanity.

Many of the heroes that were once looked to for protection were painted with the same hatred that had been reserved for mutants. The wars that raged between the Heroes of old and the combined might of the military and the Sentinels destroyed whole cities. America shut itself from the rest of the world and nursed the wounds that had torn it asunder.

It's 2030 and the great hopes for the Mutants are mostly dead. You'd fled to the plain states, far removed from the major population centers that host the largest Sentinel populations. You learned to eke out a living, feeding and sheltering yourselves and joining the Underground movement. It wasn't a good life, but it was a relatively safe life.

Until, one day, Sentinels appeared in the skies. They assembled a Sentinel base and began work on a Mutant Internment Center. The larger cities tamed, they turned their eye to where you lived. The safety of your network has been threatened. The life you'd resigned yourself to lead has been disrupted.

The heroes you'd hoped for are dead. The great voices that one spoke for all Mutantkind have been long since silenced.

Who will speak for those with no voice?

Who will stand against those who sew hatred?

Who will fight against an enemy that has overwhelmed all hope?

The battle has come to your doorstep. Will you stand up and fight or will you lay down and die?

Heroes are not born. They are forged.

Ethan Raines

It was 3am when the new sun arose in the West.

He'd been hidden by his parents, who had the good fortune to know the doctors who did the genetic testing after birth. Not tagged as an Anomalous Human, who had the potential to either give birth to a mutant or to Manifest as a full-blown Mutant, he was able to live a relatively normal life. They kept him carefully away from any subsequent testing, knowing that there was potential locked in his DNA.

He was 14 when it happened and he was one of the lucky ones: he Manifested with Teeth. Not for him the fate of the defenseless Mutants who have no way to fight against the incursions of the Anti-Mutant Tactical Teams or the Sentinels. He rose into the air like a new sun, a glowing nimbus of energy surrounding him.

Like a god, he writ his birth large across the scanners of the nearby Sentinel Facility. He had the power in him to make a difference...the kind of power that could lead the charge against the Sentinels and bring a hammer to bear upon the enemy lines. Every Resistance Cell on earth would kill for a heavy hitter like this, and he'd only just flowered. He had it in him to take down a Sentinel, maybe two at a time.

Sentinels come in threes.

He took out the first one almost immediately. A ray of light split the sky and the head of the purple monstrosity. He struck a hell of a blow, but it wasn't enough to pull anyone else into the fight. He traded blows with the other two, giving as good as he got until one of them managed to grab him with both hands. I was miles away but I swear I could hear him scream as the Sentinel squeezed.

That's when he went Nova.

The blast took out 4 city blocks on the West Side. His family, his friends....gone forever. The Sentinel who was holding him was vaporized. The remaining member of the Triad was blasted back and into the Meijer superstore, damaged but in fighting shape.

He hung in the air, weak and barely conscious. He'd risen like a Phoenix and fought like a God. He was young, powerful, and full of the heady knowledge that he was immortal, invincible. That he had been sent to help end this horrific struggle.

He died like a child, clutching the eight foot shaft the Sentinel had fired through his torso. He cried for his mother, who was so much ash beneath him and slipped free of the world.

They came after us with renewed zeal, then. Their hatred had been given a focus in the hundreds that had died when he became a human bomb. They built a park there, in memory of those who died, imploring humanity to never forget the dangers Mutants pose.

There is no memorial to the innocents who died after the attacks, either Mutants or those thought to Mutants by people too angry or stupid to care about the difference. There's no memorial to the way we've been massacred across this country.

My God, why have you forsaken us?

Are we not your children, too?

I'd be interested in trying this. I assume we have to play mutants? I haven't made it through the book yet. How big an issue would it be if I don't get around to it for say, a month?

Are you advertising here for a game you intend to run somewhere else? Or was that just a typo? If you are doing it here would players need to know the rules?

I'm kind of interested, but I don't know the game.

It's less than ten dollars until next Wednesday.

I'll do it on rpol.net. FtB doesn't have the best interface for play by post but I wanted to recruit from here first. My student teacher is taking over my classes and I just got a laptop to use at school that hook onto the internet, so I'm good to go. :)

The system itself is pretty easy to make characters for and while picking up the system would help, it's not too hard to work someone through it.

I'll say again:

It'll be a game where, if you describe the kind of character you want, it'll be possible for me to make the stats for you. I'll top out stats at d10 (and not a ton of those) to allow for growth.

If you're familiar with Marvel FASERIP, I'll basically be using information from Nightmares of Futures Past and the associated modules---not really modules in the strict adventure sense, but more ideas that can be used to help create the world and difficulties that are part of being a Mutant in this time.

If you read through those (you can find them on classicmarvel.com) you won't be spoiling anything. I'll be using some specific ideas from there, but mostly the world and some of the major events.

...and yet its still ten dollars more than I have presently. If I could have picked up the PDF, I would have done so.

Awesome. I'll give it a lookover. :)
