Lupin the Third is crime drama. Slightly less bloody, but still fits nicely in with 'Anime for MEN'.

Also, I'm something of an anime snob. I won't watch dubbed. Does netflix have subbed? I've never really checked their anime section...

Streaming has no subbed, unless it happens to have closed-captioning (and then, you have to turn the sound OFF, because the dialogue will still be English). Netflix-by-mail, though, is a way to get your sub on, with original voice acting. (Most of the DVDs these days are produced with both, and just let you decide.)

Subtitles isn't about reading text. It's about hearing the original dialogue. You don't need to know Japanese to hear voices and appreciate tone.

Ouran makes my top 6. in a generally mixed list.

I mean, really, look at them, in no particular order, because what goes where shifts a lot, where the contents usually do not.

  • Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (Manly Men being MANLY in GINORMOUS robots, Manlily murdering their manly foes with giant phallic drills.)
  • Outlaw Star (Crazy-awesome over the top future fantasy ... so far so consistent...)
  • Ouran High School Host Club (Well, it's crazy ... and over the top. Okay, makes sense... definitely doesn't fit with the previous two otherwise, though...)
  • Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's (... Well, it's got action. ... Crazy action? Sometimes... And a badass loli that firmly belongs alongside Simon from TTGL)
  • Ai Yori Aoshi (Wait ... what? Slow-paced, soft-spoken, romantic, sweet, adorable... I just wanna hug this show. ... Even though the comic is better)
  • Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team (Romeo and Juliet rewritten (until the end) as a fairly slow paced, medium-action look at a small unit operating in Veitnam or Korea in the later days of a vicious solar-system-spanning war. Unlike the other MSG series, there's no high politics, no super-ace characters, no crazy experimental or cutting-edge mobile suits (although there is one bitchin' custom model of one of my favorite 'grunt' MSes) ... except for one Mobile Armor near the end, but it's lame and I try to forget about it.)

Also, chalk me up on the 'doesn't watch undubbed if there's an existing dub' side of things. Not because I don't like reading subtitles (indeed, I watch everything, cartoons or otherwise, with subtitles, if possible. Regardless of language), but because I hate, hate, hate the majority of female japanese VAs. Their voices bring me pain. They make me want to shove a .45 in each ear and pull the trigger until the pain stops. I still don't know how I managed to survive watching Nanoha StrikerS (motherfuckers need to dub that shit, seriously). Mini Rein alone should have been enough to drive me to suicide.

I agree. However, I have been known to watch subtitled with the sound down so low I could barely make any of it out, when my wife's having trouble sleeping. So theoretically, one could do the same with CC on an English dub; this would sort-of negate the often atrocious voice-acting on the dub. Of course, you'd still be stuck with the translation miscues that dubs are infamous for.

So call it a quarter-solution, if you're stuck with Netflix streaming. If you desperately want subtitles, you'll have to go through the mail-order service instead.

Oh, and just out of curiousity, when, exactly, did Netflix streaming become the unofficial distributor of South Korean soft-core? I opened up the New Movies queue, and discovered an average of one SKsc flick on every side-scroll (so about 1 every 6 titles).

At that point, why not use headphones?

Maybe she's got crazy bat-ears like Maniah. She constantly complains about headphones even when I have trouble hearing them. While I'm wearing them.

... Crazy bat-eared freak. *mutter*

Cause I don't own a pair, don't want to buy a pair for the small number of times that I'd actually use them, and because the layout of the television room (streaming is through the Wii, so it's all on the tv set, not a computer) is such that a cord would be stretched from the set, across the room, over a table and to the sofa, meaning that it's almost certain that the cats would fuck with it.

Well, one of those isn't an issue. Wireless headphones are a thing.

There are a lot of 'pron-with-plot' type movies but some other really good ones too.
