Post PftDCast - Spoiler Policy!
New Spoiler Policy:
  1. Media Less Than One (1) Years Old:
We will make every effort to either leave the episode spoiler free, or if any discussion of the media necessitates spoiling the big reveal, we will draw a great deal of attention to that fact and give those that do not wish to be spoiled an opportunity to skip out.
  2. Media Greater Than One (1) and Less Than Five (5) Years Old:
We will discuss this media freely, but give a mild verbal warning that the discussion may include spoilers.
  3. Media Greater than Five (5) Years Old:
We will discuss this media freely with no spoiler warnings.
  4. Media which is “Re-interpreted” / “Remade” / “Recast” / “Re-imagined” / etc.:
The clock for the above three (3) categories starts when the original media is released, and is not reset with each remake.

Please, feel free to discuss this policy, below. We always welcome feedback and constructive criticism and would like to know how you feel about this policy. Especially if you feel it needs to be adjusted. I'm not promising that we will adjust it further - only that we'll listen respectfully to your viewpoint. Thank you!

Works for me. Could you post a point in the show notes where the spoilers are concluded, though? I don't like missing whole episodes because I haven't seen something yet.

Thank you!

One of the biggest problems I have had with PCftD, which has rapidly become one of my favorite podcasts, is the prevalence of spoiler talk. I've frequently had to spin past chunks of the show to avoid hearing stuff that could spoil my enjoyment of other media.

The most egregious was the detailed discussion of Inception while it was still in the theater.

Might I make a suggestion: If the referenced material is rather obscure (like an old short story) and depends on a twist ending for it's enjoyment, a brief warning my still be in order. In fact, revealing the twist of any media which is dependent on the twist for it to work dramatically should be handled with care.

Twists like the ending of Planet of the Apes are popular enough memes that they can probably be used with impunity, but revealing the end a film like Fight Club should be prefaced with some kind of warning. If you take the twist out of some movies or books, there's little point in watching them.

Totally not one to judge by but just fwiw spoilers don't bother me. I'm that guy who reads books over and over again and watches movies and shows over and over again looking for the subtle nuance that I missed the first time. Doesn't bother me a bit that I know what's coming. That said, there are many things that having seen once I have no need to ever see again.

Yeah, to reiterate though. It's not so much talking about points in a movie, it's about revealing plot twists that are the point of the movie. I might watch something like Fight Club or the Sixth Sense a second time, just to see the details I missed before big reveals. But I certainly would never need to see them a third time. That's the kind of spoiler I'm talking about.

I'm just asking for common sense awareness of the nature of the spoiler. I really hate to fast forward over stuff, particularly when I don't know how long a conversation is going to last. I stopped the inception episode and didn't finish it for a couple of weeks until I had gotten a chance to see the movie.

This.

I understand that you guys want to share treasured book/film/television/etc. experiences with each other but you're in a public forum. Revealing twist endings, even those in stories decades old (and really, that covers a LOT of stories, much much more than most people can realistically consume in a lifetime), so casually is kind of inconsiderate. I realize you both produce this show while asking nothing of your listeners in return, and that those of us dissatisfied with certain aspects of the show can just choose not to listen, but I'd rather not do that. I like what you put out every week and find what you present to be very helpful towards my role play gaming experience.

And, honestly, if the hosts of the film podcast Filmspotting are able to discuss the film Catfish in depth without once revealing the big surprise (a surprise the narrative depends on, mind you) I think spoiler heavy media can be danced around by anyone while still being able to cover general themes and overall enthusiasm for the product.

Just a quick note to let you all know, I'm reading these posts carefully and I hear the valid concern about our treatment of spoilers and spoiler warnings in our episodes.

I'll continue to watch this thread carefully and discuss these issue with my co-hosts; so that our view will expand. Thank you, for your feedback.

Post Re: PftDCast - Spoiler Policy!
I'd like to comment on the remake part of the policy. I think setting the clock at the time of the original makes sense, but only for aspects that are true in both versions. I would suggest that you not enact that policy for plot points that are new to the original. If you haven't seen the original, you should probably err on the side of caution.

The announcement of the policy actually contained an example of why this is a problem. You mentioned 3:10 to Yuma, and then gave a plot point that is not true in the original. This makes it a spoiler for the remake, not for the entire intellectual property.

Now, I'm not terribly concerned about spoilers for my own part. You haven't actually done anything in the podcast that has bothered me. I didn't listen to the Inception pod-cast because you gave a sufficient warning. There have been other movies you've warned about that I've consciously decided that I'd rather hear the commentary even if it means I hear spoilers. I just think that if you want to effectively guard against spoilers, you need to keep in mind at what time a particular plot point came into being.
