If I have a mid sized group of star wars fans in my family, and my fiancee has a small group of trekkies in hers, how many fights to the death should we expect at the wedding?
I figure the venue would like a count beforehand. Well, on the assumption that all fights are between members of each group, and not members within a group, then the maximum number of fights possible is equal to the number of members of the smallest group. However, that would be an over-estimation of the number of fights expected if the probability of a fight was less than 1. A better estimate of the number of fights to expect would be the probability, P, of a fight happening times the number of Star Trek fans, T: P * T. This, however, ignores the likelihood of one fight spawning another. The probability of one fight spawning another could be expressed as R making the probability of one particular fight, F, being P * (1 + R) * (F - 1). To get the entire probability, you would have to sum those terms together, which s more math than I can make up early on a Friday morning. As long as there are only Storm Troopers and Redshirts involved, it shouldn't matter.

But what's the probability of people at the wedding being too short for a storm trooper? Assuming the wedding guests are taken from a random distribution of the population (which is tenuous considering that wedding guests are often family and therefore have some genetic relationship), the probability of a guest being too short to be a storm trooper would be equal to the percentile ranking of Jango Fett's height (or more specifically, the actor who played him) within the general population. For example, if he ranked in the 67th percentile, then the probability of a person chosen at random being shorter than him is 67/100 - there is a 67% chance that a random wedding guest is shorter than Jango Fett, hence too short to be a storm trooper.

I figure the venue would like a count beforehand. About twelve parsecs.

So what I'm getting from Clint is that the Dothraki are likely to consider my wedding a dull affair?

 Re: Random Forum Thoughts.
*stumbles in* I've hiked well between 30-50 miles over the past two weeks over some very difficult terrain. I am completely exhausted and I only get a single day off a week to sleep and do laundry. Despite it all I don't actually completely hate field camp and have started to have some fun.
Except for the extreme heat and cold part. Especially where it goes from cold to hot in less than five minutes or when it stops raining as soon as I put a poncho on and then starts again when it's off.

For anyone wondering, current bet is on slide stop slightly out of position jamming it up. That's kind of a jesus part on the 1911, doing at least 3 jobs. Symptoms? Live round in chamber, slide won't move more than a quarter inch. Not in battery, won't come far enough out to eject.
