PE episode 33: All of chad's games are epic.
Doing Adam's job while he's out of town. New episode is posted http://bit.ly/xJEsl0We actually discuss, Cantirion's request in our topic mine. What type of games do you guys like playing, Epic scope or small scope? Also if we can get some newer itunes reviews that would also be sick. We record the episodes live @ twitch.tv/dirtyxbyrd PS Mass effect 3 is really good but bums me out.

Re: Killing as a benchmark of Epic. When confronted with new combat maximized PCs in Shadowrun, I've started to use: "Really? So your specialty is being marginally more effective than a pack of cigarettes or a bad day on I-5?"
Re: Adventure categories based on 5 level break downs. I've talked about that for Earthdawn. It is broken down into Initiate (circle 1), Apprentice (circles 2-4), Journeyman (circles 5-8), Warden (circles 9-12) and Master (circles 13-15). As an initiate, you're just trying to prove your worth. You need to be as good as a mundane person (guard, shopkeeper, whatever). At this circle, it is more of an interview, so you're going around running errands. If there is a fight, you're just one of many people on one side.
As an Apprentice, you need to prove yourself better than the average mundane. So fights might be you against a few things or against a large physical threat. You're 'win condition' is defeating the opponent.
At circle 4, everyone gets access to thread weaving, which allows you to use magic items. The magician disciplines give it to you at 1st circle. In any case, once past 4th circle, you're taking on magical opponents and threats. Whereas lots of mundanes could handle the apprentice level stuff, it takes magic to fight magic in the journeyman circles.
When you get to the Warden circles, threats are just 'kill one guy and you win'. A warden level adventure would be like an entire army is threatening your town. You can kill all the guys you want, they'll make more. These adventures aren't solved with violence.
By the time you reach the Master circles, the scope of your adventure changes the world. Although you're probably exceedingly good at combat, combat has little effect on the situation. Threats would be like Zombie Apocalypse or meteor striking the world.

I've always felt that in almost any shadowrun mission, combat is a sign you have failed. You wanted to get in and out clean, ideally with nobody knowing you'd even been there.

I didn't read the books but isn't the Lord of the Rings an Epic story with "low-level" characters in the form of the hobbits.
