 Re: Robutts
Actually yes. It's 3 orders of magnitude too low. Lightning is in the range of a Terawatt. 1000 Gigawats.

 Re: Robutts
So, the DeLorean would have exploded. Or blown a fuse, depending on how safety-conscious Doc Brown engineers things. The guy who put a nuclear reactor in it. And stole the uranium. Or was it plutonium?

One thing the movie got right was the back of the DeLorian was basally 1 large lead box. It would take a pretty good explosion to crack that baby open. Oh an interesting figure I just calculated, A bolt of lightning has about the equivalent energy of 7.5 tons of TNT.

The lightning would have hugged the exterior, gone into the ground, and been done with.

Hm... Maybe the excessively high wattage is actually required to deal with the natural insulation?

The lightning would have hugged the exterior, gone into the ground, and been done with. But the DeLorian wasn't getting struck. It was the hook attached to the cars electronics. So even given the shell of the car would protect the occupations if it got struck the transformer would have gotten a direct strike.
