 Some of my oldest friends...
These are some of my oldest friends: actual wax-dice that I've owned and played with since I was first introduced to RPGs in the early summer of 1982. They're a mixed group: half came from the Basic D&D (red box) set, and the other half from the Expert D&D (blue box) set. My brother probably still has the other half... I still have the white crayon. It was a great summer. These guys have been with me for 27 1/2 years. Upon reflection, I think that dark blue d4 came from the Companion Rules set (teal box) from around 84 or 85...Any of you still hang on to any or all of that first set?

I don't recall when I got my first dice. Or what they even looked like.
I do have a little bag of my favorite dice that I tote around, hand-picked from my giant bag-o-dice. Does that count?

I guess, but in a different way. I have my favorite dice, too. These, though, are the distinguished elders of my dice chest, those who have been with me the longest...

My first dice met with an untimely and fiery death. Really. Yeah, my folks were (read: are) of those who think playing D&D means you are a Satanist. They even made sure I didn't try to salvage the melted wreckage out of the fireplace later, when they made me clean the ashes.

Re: Some of my oldest friends...
I started when I was pretty young and nabbed my first set of dice at a gaming shop when I was 7. I only have two dice from that set (a d6 and a d20), along with some others from years past. It isn't one I use on a weekly basis, but it's still with me. David Gray wrote: My first dice met with an untimely and fiery death. Really. Personally, I'm a second generation table top gamer. My biological parents weren't good people but I'm glad they got me into this hobby.

Re: Some of my oldest friends...
I still have a tin full of my very oldest dice, from around 1980-81. Most of them are a bit battered and have chipped and rounded corners etc. Most of the ones I use regularly are rather newer, although I don't think I've acquired any new ones in at least 15 years.

Makes sense actually. Do you know how difficult it is to get someone to open up a game shop on a tropical island with a giant volcano on it?

I've still got my first die, ever--a d20 that's actually a glorified d10 (1-0, twice). It's been worn to a nearly round ball.
