Post Re: Fear the Boot Writer's Guild
1. What do you want out of this group?

I'm not quite sure. I'd probably want a group of people to bounce ideas of of if I am struggling with parts of a story I am writing in my spare time or in my writing class, or as plot for one of the groups I am trying to run.

2. How often do you want to meet?

I am not sure

3. When works best?

Tuesday, Thursday, Friday after 6 EST or Saturday before 7 EST or Sunday before 8 EST

4. I've contemplated giving out a writing prompt every month (you have a full month, then, to write a short story). Is that something you'd be interested in?

It could be interesting to do as something fun, but It might not be something that I would be able to do every time with school work and all. So perhaps not making it mandatory.

5. Any other suggestions or ideas for this?

One of my suggestions was that if we can't find a single time we all can agree one perhaps we could schedule multiple times a week on different days so that if someone misses one meet up then they could try to come to another?

Just a quick reminder that this is happening in about 10 minutes.

If for some reason I don't have your contact info and you still want to join us, you can find me on skype under the username Rinyavie.

And if for some reason I fail to spot you online and you'd like to join, send me a message on Skype and I'll add you to the call once we start.

First night: success.

Couple of things to note. First off - we've agreed to meet every other week on Saturdays at 7 eastern, 6 central, 5 mountain, 4 pacific. This is not one of those "You must attend" things - if you can make it, cool. If not, cool.

Also, we realized that this might not work for the rest of you. So if someone wants to organize and run that other group, go for it.

We'll be using Google Docs for sharing. If you want to be in on this, PLEASE contact me so I can share your information with the others.

We'll also be posting up optional writing prompts on the forums - you don't need to do it, but if you want to, go for it.

One of the things we discussed is that as a group we don't want to see anything explicit (no erotica), nor anything that is openly anti-religious (we have several members who would be offended by those types of stories). I, however, have no taboo subjects, so I'm willing to work with folks in a more one-on-one basis for some of those stories and ideas.

The next meeting will be on December 17. I won't be there because I'll be out of town, so Saragon is gonna facilitate for me (thanks, Saragon!).

And finally, for next time, the following folks are going to be submitting stuff for critique:

Saragon - a short story/homily thing from a game
Leoff - part of a play she's working on
Timespike - a couple of blog posts
SilverseraphAE - part of the screenplay/script he's working on

As you can see, we've actually got a lot of different types of media and things that our Booters do. I'm really excited to read these, and I think it's awesome that there are so many folks doing different types of creative things.

Post Re: Fear the Boot Writer's Guild
A few thoughts hit me after the call wrapped up.

1. How are we going to be submitting our works?

I would assume putting them on Google Docs, but I don't wanna presume anything.

2. How much is too much?

The script I am going to have a rough draft finished by Monday on is around 26 pages long, and the "probably longer than feature length" personal screenplay project that I would love feedback on is currently at 48 pages and I am not even halfway done with that

I don't want to throw too much at you guys but I also don't want to drop to little so that things are confusing. Script is less dense then prose but 26 pages is still 26 pages.

Should I give a few scenes at a time? Or should I just post the whole thing as a piece and then anyone can read/critic/enjoy/dislike at their leisure?

1. Yep, submitting via Google Docs. Were you there when we were sharing e-mail addresses? Just upload your stuff and e-mail the group.

2. I would say to break it down into manageable chunks. I'd say that everyone should be spending about half an hour to an hour editing and critiquing each thing submitted.

Also, FYI, Chad is awesome and he'll be giving us some Sticky threads.

Post Re: Fear the Boot Writer's Guild
I've only read one screen play but I assume that in general they're like play scripts in that they read much faster then regular prose. The screenplay I read was pitch for a pilot TV episode. Came in at 30 pages and was easier to get through than a 10 page short story. So I personally would say 26 pages is not always 26 pages.

As for the feature, that might be a bit much. Are movie scripts broken up into informal acts? I think I remember hearing something like that and if so I would imagine that the each act would be around the right size. If not try to imagine where the acts would be and submit it like that.

I'm glad the first meeting was a success, and I'm sorry I missed it. I know for a fact that I will once again not be able to make the next meeting (fortunately it's 'cause I'm GMing until about 7pm that night.)

Anyway, I'll send my email along. I would still like to be involved to the extent I can.

Excellent. I'll add you to our contact list, which I think I'm also going to put up online when I get a moment.
