That was the only time I was subscribed to all of the bat books. I have every single issue.

Going Sane sounds really interesting. I wish I could find a copy at the library. :(

I came across it completely by chance while browsing a comic shop I used to frequent in Santa Cruz. If you can find it, it's one worth buying.

No argument here. I have most the stories from that year, and still bought the TPBs too. I was actually pissed that one of my favorite NML stories (the one with Lynx) was excluded from the compilation.

While not "about" Batman, the Gotham Central follows the Gotham PD while having to deal and be cops in "Batman's Gotham".

Just finished Year One and I loved the focus on Gordon, who arguably is the central character of the work. So this:

sounds great!

Oh... if you're okay with a Batman spin-off book then, yeah, Gotham Central is awesome. It ended way too soon though some of the cast members carry on in other books, pre-Nu52.

Agree with Gotham Central. Fantastic. As far as Bruce Wayne as Batman, Grant Morrison's run on Batman & Robin featured fantastic art with a creepy story sprinkled with some camp. But the best Batman story I've read is Black Mirror which collects Scott Snyder's run on Detective Comics featuring Dick Grayson as a stand-in for Batman. This story is the best Batman story in modern times. That's no hyperbole.

Snyder continued on with Bruce Wayne as Batman in the New DC 52 Batman book. The collection of the first half of the Night of Owls arc is out now, and I'd expect the collection of the second half in the next 6 months. The Night of the Owls story was fantastic and solidifies Snyder as the best Batman writer in a long time, even better than Grant Morrison, Wayne!

If you dig Snyder, you should check out Vertigo's American Vampire series. He co-wrote the first few arcs with Stephen King.

Morrison's good at the weird psychological horror. Snyder does good mystery.

I've been picking up American Vampire in trade. Such great stuff. If you like American Vampire, you might want to check out Locke & Key, my favorite book out right now.
