I have the same experience. I have a whole stack of new DVD's, still in the shrinkwrap that I have not watched - some of them I bought 10+ years ago.

Stop counting. When you finish what you're reading (or decide you're done with it), pick up a new one.

I have found that this is exactly why I have only read about 50% of the books on my bookshelf. If I'm not counting and trying to reach a goal, I don't always pick up a new book right away when I finish one, I may read a book every few weeks, instead of always being reading something. And I like to re-read books over and over again, so that gets me no where.

Trying for 50 a year has gotten me more motivated to keep picking up books I haven't read yet and keep going. Its helping me clear out my backlog.

For me, the counting is a side-product of seeing what books I'm reading over a year. It started off as curiosity about what kinds of things I was reading throughout the year. For example, in 2010 I read a lot of tie-in novels. Last year, it turns out I read quite a bit of non-fiction. Both years I re-read a fair number of books that I'd read in the past. This year, so far I've read a lot of crap - but I've only re-read two books that I've read before.

The internet has a lot to do with this, I think. I probably read about as many words in a day, but they are not in book form.

It's probably also related to the same reasons I don't game as much. Older=more responsibilities=less free time.

It's also funny that my TV watching has similarly declined. I used to watch sitcoms! I can't imagine wasting a half hour on a sitcom nowadays.

I will just repost this as it says almost EXACTLY what I would say on every topic. I'm knocking down some serious "chapter books" listening to my young son read.

NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERDFIGHTER!

That sounds pretty close to my list last summer, besides the books that weren't out yet. The Fault in Our Stars is my favorite novel since Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried.

Since picking up a nook, I actually read less than I used too. I average a book every two weeks when not reading page-turning series. Now if graphic novels count, then I am easily past 50 books in the last two months. But you know... whatevs.

Will I don't have a quota I try to meet with books. I either read almost nothing for pleasure for a month or find something to get invested in. Once I am invested it can become a bit of a obsession. For example I read the Dragonlance twin saga and the stand alone sequel Second Generation in two weeks. For now I haven't found a book that has grabbed my attention.

I'm planning on writing my thesis on the vampire in film, television, and literature, so I kind of HAD to read them. Did you know that there's an actual PLOT in the first Twilight book? I had no idea. It's stupid and terrible and makes absolutely no sense, but it existed.

Fifty Shades was because someone said, "Hey, good bondage erotica!" and I said, "Sure, I've always considered writing romance to make money, and I should figure out what's popular now." Those books are even worse than Twilight in the "makes no sense" category. (I actually have a huge rant built up about these books).

There's a reason for that: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/jacketcopy/2012/05/the-origins-of-50-shades-of-grey-go-missing.html

At the moment, I'm rereading Blade of Tyshalle and Dearly Devoted Dexter. I don't actually track the number of books I read a year, but I'm a fast reader and sell plasma twice a week, which effectively means I spend 2-4 hours sitting around unable to move out of a supine position, and the movies they show are extremely hit and miss, so I don't risk it.My volunteer jobs also have a certain amount of sitting around at times, and I ride the bus semi-often since work gives me a free bus pass. If we count trade paperbacks, I probably read an easy 100 books a year.

I did have a friend who decided to track her page count instead of books per year last year though. I'm not sure where she ended up, but that to me seems like it makes more sense, since it's unfair to compare A GRRM Westeros or WoT book to Dresden files or Discworld to Scott Pilgrim or Martin Millar or Jeff Lindsay. Although, to be completely fair, I read house of Leaves for the first time this year (well, starting the end of last year- first week of Jan. Had to Fly to Texas) and It took me the longest of any book I've read in a long time, due to constantly flipping to the appendix, flipping the book around, deciphering the letters, etc. That book is a mindscrew of epic proportions!

And excellent, I highly recommend it ^.^

50 books a year? I would love to, but with work and sports and all the other duties of a deticated citizen, I don't have that kind of time.

One book a month is more what I shoot for. And twelve books a year is not bad either.

Also, by your to read list,

I would say you have some great books in store.

Happy hunting. :geek:

I have the same problem with webcomics. Last year I'm sure I read the equivalent of 75-100 novels, but since they were in a browser with pictures, I have no way of measuring really. (Also, this was when I was being kind of a recluse, so I have no plans to repeat it.)

I'm sad to report that in the 5 weeks since I started this topic I've only finished three books: 1984, I, Robot, and Robot Dreams.

I quite like Asimov. I'll get to Foundation soon.

Orwell... not so much. Might still do Animal Farm but after 1984... unless someone tells me that Animal Farm is so much better I'll probably skip that.

Reading Ringworld now.
