 The Fringe
Anyone else catch it? What did you think.
I thought it was just interesting enough to make me watch again but I don't need another big "Lost" type mystery show to follow, so if all of those different symbols at the commercial breaks are important then I am out...

 Re: The Fringe
I watched it. I liked the episode and I will catch a few more. The first episode didn't "blow me away" but it piqued my interest.

I agree completely, about the "not another LOST!" sentiment. Personally I thought it was like an updated X-Files - federal agents and the whole thing! I'm certainly willing to give it a chance and continue watching.

Saw it, it was good, it is on a bad day for me to catch regularly.
I loved the crazy old guy, I hope they don't change him as the series goes on. He must stay just as crazy.

 Re: The Fringe
I suppose we shall have to see, but I didn't watch X-files so it is all new to me.

 Re: The Fringe
While last nights ep was OK ... I was able to stay one step ahead of the plot all night long. Pretty standard stuff for a sci-fi show. The only problem I have with the old doctor is the techno-babble and techno-solution. This smacks just a little like ST:TNG. Whatever the problem is, there is a technological solution, that he just happens to know about and is able to perform, and in the required amount of time. That is going to get old, really fast.
Let's admit it - sometimes science / medicine / technology cannot help. The person is too far gone or the problem is too complex or the process is irreversible. Furthermore, many crimes are solved by gumshoe investigators and not lab geeks; the show has a qualified federal agent, let her do her work! I'd love the clue that solved the case to have been found by a combination of interviews, evidence analysis, and deductive reasoning. Not just some techno-babble followed by impossible computer models of obscure bridges that can be instantly called up and manipulated in real-time 3D. Or that crap with a laser-camera-thingy that can decode optic nerve signals.
But, here I am griping a lot and the show was certainly able to hold my attention and introduce some fascinating characters and a deeper mystery. It's not all bad and I'm on board ... for now.

 Re: The Fringe
I've still yet to see the newest episode but have watched the pilot and ep 2. My intital impressions are in agreement with a lot of what you say runester. The mystique of the show is heavily focused on the fringe science, which is itself questionable by it's fringeness, so the explanations of things sort of fall short of the initial "JeeZ, WTF is going on!" feel brought by the intro scene is bled away by the climax. People on this airplane melt, but it's just a weaponized pathogen. This chick has a baby born and die of old age in a day, because of a pituitary abnormality? It's like Abrams is trying to wrap up mysteries in the one hour show time frame - which I like, but it lacks the lingering questions that made the X Files so great. Then again, the alternative is mind twisting confusion that is Lost and was Alias, so I've heard. I'm sure this concise storytelling is a lure, those commercial break images will have a meaning cause J.J. doesn't seem to like to waste anything.

Quote: I hesitate to get drawn into this series honestly, having seen the effects of Lost with people quitting their jobs to diagram all the theoretical purposes and ramifications of the Dharma Initiative and modeling the island in mashed potatoes as their families fall apart. That is a classic! But, like you, I'm a little suspicious of the dangling plot-line. So far, we're still watching. But, we'll see how far it goes.

 Re: The Fringe
So far, I'm still enjoying the show, but I hope they don't always focus so much on the crazy scientist guy. So far, everything has basically been solved by him and his 30 year old lab. I hope they start including actual detective work and mystery and such.
