Post Re: HBO's A Game of Thrones
Here in Chicago, my friends and I are trying to scheme a way to get HBO. While I own a TV, I am unable to get any sort of broadcast (no cable, satellite or even antenna) but I am jonesing for this show. My wife and I have a Mac Mini hooked up to our TV, though, so if HBO put it up streaming...

I'm a huge fan of GRRM and have been salivating over this show for the last three years since he announced that HBO was going to do a pilot.

The deal is on. I'm in for a third of an HBO subscription.

Damn, this show looks good from the trailers. And judging from reactions, it seems everyone and their cat in the geek population is looking forward to this.

Excellent! Another review by someone who seemingly is unfamiliar with the source material. I am still eagerly awaiting the first episode.

Grr... it appears they're airing it over here from next Monday, but only on Sky... which I don't have because I'm not paying a monthly subscription to watch crap TV on top of my license fee.

Looks like I'll be waiting for the DVD boxed set... Christmas would you say?

It goes even beyond that....it was a review by someone who appears uncomfortable with the genre.

Quote:
If you are not averse to the Dungeons & Dragons aesthetic, the series might be worth the effort. If you are nearly anyone else, you will hunger for HBO to get back to the business of languages for which we already have a dictionary.

So, from that, I'll take: "If you enjoy the sci-fi/fanstasy genre, this series shows promise. But if you still hold a high school clique mentality when it comes to hobbies outside your own, you won't want to watch it."

Personally, I don't really care if anyone else likes or dislikes it. That does not make any difference at all to me. I love the books, and from the trailer and other snippets I've seen it looks like I'm going to enjoy seeing it on screen just as much.

The only people who are going to be put off by reading bad reviews are people whose opinions of art are informed by reviews. And who cares about them?
