I'm sorely tempted to pick this up. I loved DQ VIII, which was my first real exposure to the series, and DQIX is still a good go-to game for when I just wanna dungeon crawl with a custom team.
So this game will be like the side quest in VIII where you collected monsters and formed a team of them to fight, only moreso?
Yes.
Long Answer;
Yes, the entire game is the building of an amazing monster team, with a new interesting mechanic!
Apparently the larger the 'size' of a monster, the more slots on your team they take up to compensate for their massive size and power. Previously you could have the gargantuan final bosses of previous Dragon Quest games, at a reduced power.
But now! Can you consider having a FINAL BOSS on your team? Complete with world-shattering abilities and the 5x larger than anything else in the world size!?
Build a team, fuse monsters, etc. etc.
The only downside to people who are not entirely versed on the series is that...
Well monsters go back to level 1 when fused. This is not a problem because of the mass power boost, but if you are trying to follow a fusion chain you might want to wait until the post-game.
But this is built around the ability to have a level 99 monster that's never been fused to equal the power of a level 50 monster that has been. So it's give and take.
Also keep in mind weapons, which give serious stat boosts, but cannot be used in vs play.
