 Frozen Synapse
After listening to the GWJ and TMA podcasts rave about it, I finally picked up Frozen Synapse. It's as good as they say. Other folks must have it here; what's your game handle there, so I can die horribly to you? My account there is, unsurprisingly, "Krenn".

Got it, totally agree, but I never have played any multi-player games with it.
I've got a deal after work that might last a few minutes or a few hours, if I have the time would be glad to do a shout out and fire up a game or three. -- TAZ

Much like Stars! or other turn-submission games, each party gets the previous turn's results, works out their response on their own time, then uploads it. When the turns are done, the server processes, and out go the results. Not sure what the max time limit would be, though. Now, you can both be playing at the same time, and get super-rapid turnaround on the turns, but it doesn't have to be that way. It can easily be "whenever you get five minutes".

Aye, but I do think we have to be both online to start a game before it goes asynchronous. -- TAZ

Also, it's half off on steam this weekend! http://store.steampowered.com/news/6049/I'm Taladel on FS (apparently it's case sensitive)

 Re: Frozen Synapse
I tried it, but I got fed up with the (seeming) randomness, as in an enemy appearing in my line of sight at the other end of the map, spraying wildly and hitting with one bullet, killing me. This can be a damned unforgiving game sometimes

 Re: Frozen Synapse
Here's something I found, Gorkamorka, that might alleviate your frustration. Quote: You are Tactics. As you may have surmised from the material shown, it is your task, as a program with infinite processing powers to devise plans which will lead your meat robots to victory. With any given tactical situation seemingly frozen in time you are free to mock up plans for the enemy, for your own troops and simulate outcomes as long as you need. When the time has come and you are sure your plan is optimal you will commit to it, and find out what your enemy's plan was and whether the next five seconds will bring victory, death or another lease on life.
There is no luck in this game, aside from the card of units you are dealt at the beginning of the match and the layout of the level. As soon as one of your units spots another, it will start setting up for the kill shot. If the unit is allowed to complete the time, the killshot will happen, with no chance factoring in. How long it will take is determined by four factors: - current cover of the enemy - current speed of the unit and the enemy - whether it sighted the enemy first - whether the unit was already prepared to take down an enemy in that direction
Success or failure are not determined by unit levels or fanciful equipment, they are determined by your ability to assess the tactical situation and use timing and location to your advantage. It is chess with guns.
As for gameplay content, the game comes with a length single player campaign of 50+ battles, a customizable and capable AI to battle in skirmish mode. The real gem though is the multiplayer mode, which does matchmaking or challenging via a central server that retains all match data indefinitely and lets you start or pick up matches with anyone at any time, as well as look up other player's stats and watch their matches.
Match modes range from normal death-match, to hostage rescue, flag collection, base defense and land control. Each match type can be played in either a light mode, where all units are always visible, or a dark mode, where your view is restricted to what your units can see.
As for the units, they come in five varieties: Machinegunner, Shotgunner, Sniper, Rocketeer, Grenadeer, useless civilian. The first three vary in movement speed, the time they take to set up a kill shot, as well as the range they can hit enemy units at. The next two are controlled more directly and take 5 seconds to recover after every shot. The grenades can be shot around corners, while rockets take out corners. The civilians sometimes occur as hostages (in multiplayer), prey, or random crud in the fight (in singleplayer).

Interesting. That makes me half tempted to play it.
