"There are a couple of other things you could try, if you think it worthwhile. If the gem utilises divination magic then touching your map to it might produce interesting and potentially revealing results."

"Then there is the wand of demon-slaying..."

"Yul, ask Box to describe what he can see."

"Also, ask him how long he has been back in Mechanus."

"Box, Morlan, Dunn, Mel, Emfrid and myself are still in the catacombs with the demons and Drow. I am contacting you using my mental powers.
When you touched the gem, your physical body stopped moving. It is here with us now...I realize that may be able to make sense of that.
How long have you been back in Mechanus?
Can you see us?"

Morlan explains what he is thinking.

"It's a door, right. So presumably there must be a way to open the door. Yet all we have so far is the fact that when you touch the gem it sucks your mind into the gem. I'm wondering if there is something you must do inside the gem in order to open it. Something that was clearly beyond the drow and demons who came before us."

"That is why I want to know as much as possible about what Box can see or sense in there."

"Box, can you describe your surroundings?"

Box is silent for a time, but finally responds.

"We do not know how long we have been here," it says, seemingly quite surprised with this observation.

"We..." he starts again. "I have been misled. This is a confusing place. It appears to be the Pentadrone's station. I am with six of my fellow quadrones. I have been forgiven and returned to a properly functioning state."

There is another pause.

"Correction: I seem to have been returned to a properly functioning state. It is distressing to learn otherwise."

"Interesting," Joshua says, "the gem gives you the appearance of something you want... perhaps to open the door you need to walk away from the fulfilment of your dreams... nasty."

"That does seem a likely solution, although I'm unsure exactly how Box should deny his dream-fulfilment. Do you have any ideas?"

"Box, do you want to return to us?"
"Can you see us now."
"Do you remember touching the gem fastened to the door?"

"Please tell Box that I hope he decides to come back to his body, so he can continue exploring the nature of free will with me. Also, please tell him that I miss him. Thanks."
