Mel speaks 'demonic', which is maybe the trade languages of the lower planes? I dunno. I leave that up to you.

Mel will run with Morlan, but ready his holy water for throwing if need be.

Too bad Mel joined Joshua and Dunn! And Demonic and Abyssal are the same language, but 'Demonic' is so Prime.

Yul calls down the shaft, explaining the bebilith problem in as few words as possible. Meanwhile, Dunn is examining the East door and hears what sounds like a man running at full sprint toward the door from the other side. The sound of bare feet slapping the stone floor in a long corridor beyond echoes in his ears.

-----------

Box nods his body. "To the uninitiated, Abyssal is a harsh language. But the bebilith is lamenting, rather than expressing anger. It apologizes for attempting to capture me in its web, and is explaining that the sight of a modron startled it. It says that it is trapped here against its will, and asks that I come down and set it free."

Emfrid seems to think Morlan is joking about the holy water, which is a good indication of the plan's viability.

Yul contemplates this information before deciding to act. First he protects himself with Mind bar while telling the other he is going to attempt to contact and then mindlink with
the creature and see if what it is telling box is true using Truth Ear.
Truthear
When a psionist uses truthear, he can tell whether other people intentionally lie. He does not hear their words translated into truth; he merely knows whether or not speakers believe they are lying.

Mind Bar
Mind Bar is a magican's bane and the telepath's boon. It gives the psionicist 75% magic resistance against charm, confusion, ESP, fear, feeblemind, magic jar, sleep, and suggestion spells. It also offers complete protection against possession of any sort. In addition, mind bar protects a psionicist against all telepathic powers, except the five contact-establishing attacks. No telepathic power can affect a barred mind unless the telepathic attack prevails in a psychic contest. (The defender used the mind bar)

Yul erects his mental barrier, but he has not yet seen the creature as it is hidden below the lip of a pit (which is, itself, shielded by an illusion). He needs to get a visual on the thing before he can contact it, right?

Sorry I still haven't gotten a handle on the psionics stuff. I need to grab a hard copy of the book off ebay.

Actually, I was wrong on the sight thing. If Yul is aware of the presence of a target in a specific location then he can attempt to make contact. Now, where the having met or seen thing comes into play is if there is more than one mind in that location. It there is more than one intelligent creature down the hole then Yul might have a hard time knowing which one is the Belilith.
Need a handbook - I found this. Happy reading. I hadn't worried about too much of it so far. Combat has not really come into play and Yul's part has been limited. FYI, I am not using the power score option mentioned in the book.

Well, heck, Dunn doesn't want some poor guy to get trapped down here. He opens the door.

Hold on, I'm confused... I thought it was Morlan, Mel, Joshua, and Dunn? Or is Morlan with Box and Emfrid?

Mel, Joshua, and Dunn are investigating the lab at the bottom of the former secret passage; Yul, Morgan, Box, and Emfrid just ran back up the open stairs nearby. Last I recall, Yul had broken off to holler information down the former secret passage, so you could say he is with neither group.

Yul contacts the bebilith and confirms that it is, indeed, lying. Linking his mind with the abyssal denizen leaves the psionicist feeling dirty, as even with every precaution taken, visions of evil are so much a part of the creature's thoughts that they are inescapable to a certain degree.

Nortis peeks out from behind a toppled column at Morlan and the others.

-----------

Dunn grasps the old, iron handle of the laboratory door and swings it inward, revealing a long, dark corridor leading east. In that passage, about thirty feet away, stands a corpse-like figure racing toward him with dead, cloudy eyes locked in desperate fury.

The undead human's joints snap and pop sickeningly as it rushes forward, mouth working unevenly, and three feet of knotted white hair trailing behind it. The figure is nude, though rot has been unkind to his anatomy - the red robes it once wore are now little more than tatters hanging from a silver collar.
