Re: Earthdawn: Age of Legend (OOC Discussion)
The Spy discipline I think was introduced in The Earthdawn Journal back in the FASA days.

Is it something we could reasonably expect to accomplish in a short time, or would we be signing these kids on as NPC tag-a-long apprentices?) Good point, and you should know, having been initiated yourselves. The short answer is that it varies by discipline. Wizards select and initite their recruits by seeing how well they deal with taking in knowledge by being flustered Weaponsmith initiations tend to come after hours of helping around the forge. Sky Raiders are made do menial pointless tasks until the recruit has enough and refuses. Air Sailers have a similar start but they fail to become air sailers if they refuse, their success comes from accepting the menial tasks with good grace. Tail Dancers chose the bravest t'skrang they can find and teach them about their tails. The apprentice, in all cases has a moment of epiphany, where the discipline makes sense. So, if you want to train them it probably means keeping them around. Or you could put them in touch with an appropriate mentor if you felt they were more suited to another discipline than your own.

I can't help picture this as turning off the desk lamp so you can read by candlelight. "Hello perception modifiers, how are you?"

Re: Earthdawn: Age of Legend (OOC Discussion)
The point of the torch is not to create light, it is to make smoke. If the passages open up someplace else, then a slight air current would cause the smoke to go in a specific direction, particularly depending on whether the trap door was opened or closed. The draft may pull into the passages or blow out into the room. Or it may be stagnant, which has its own problems. In any case, the effects are more obvious if the torch is the only light source. Once we ascertain the draft, the light quartz can be activated again for better lighting.

Re: Earthdawn: Age of Legend (OOC Discussion)
OK, barring anything dramatic, the procedure will be to 'chart' this path to where the smoke exits, then turn back to find the source. We can check out all the maze like twisty passages after that. The smoke trail can act as a sort of bread crumbs so we don't get lost, so I don't want to go deep into a maze without it.
Obviously, if something exciting happens, we'll deal with it, but other than noting the existence of forks, no need to slow down the game to a crawl.
