Post Re: Poison'd PBP(Mature)
I'm sure that's up to the evil GM to decide, I probably would not have it come up in the first
session. But, I'm sure Fate will have it come up sooner rather than later. :-)

Gonna go with an open table and show the character, but I'll use (a silly amount of) spoiler
tags for information that is hidden in-game at the start.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Handsome Jack (Walden)

Devil: 5
Soul: 3
Brutality: 4
Ambition: 4
Brink: 5
Profile: 4
X

Position: Surgeon

Sins:
Blasphemy (bargin with the devil)
Murder x2
Idolatry x2 (Talks to a skull which he keeps in a sturdy locked box.)
(He puts on a good front, but the crew knows he has a history or he wouldn't be here.
I'm sure the rumor mill has him guilty of everything under the sun. Pirates, they gossip
like old ladies.)

Suffered:
Arrest
Disownment
Impressment
Beating X

Ambition:
To be Captain
To be revenged upon my father, Curt Walden.
To spit in the eye of God
To live forever

Profile:
Jack fancies the straight razor and always has several on his person.
Jack is slight, nevertheless quick, wiry-strong, and vicious.

Bargins:
Every year that I take a good soul and trap it in my skin is a year
that I do not age.

Looks:
Lean, clean shaven, and blonde with relatively good teeth, Jack appears
to be in his 20's but is actually 43. He has strange little tatoos on his
chest and back, but
always wears a shirt to cover these. The key to his
lock box is always around his neck on a leather thong and is tucked under
his shirt. Jack has a straight razor tucked into each cuff and another in his boot.

History:
Twenty three years ago, Jack was the favored son of Curt Walden, a rich
merchant in England. His father sent Jack to school where he was learning
to become a doctor. While in school, Jack fell in with the wrong people
and became a Satanist. They needed body parts and he was easily seduced
by the lovely Jessica Black. Well, the ritual that was to introduce him
to the inner circle somehow went horribly wrong. Jack wakes up in a
London alley covered in blood and sitting next to a box with a head in it.
[We'll leave the identity of the head unknown for now. It's not his dad's
skull, but it might be Jessica's, or his first victim, or the devil's own.]
Jack promptly gets arrested by constables, "Lock 'em up until we get this
sorted out." But, before he can get charged, he bribes the jailor to let
him escape with the evidence (the box.) Back at his home, Curt is appalled
at his son's condition and fall from grace. He's disowned and chase out of
his own home by his furious father. With nowhere go and only a few coins
in his pocket, he heads down to the docks to drown his sorrows in some cheap
ale.
Of course, when it rains, it pours. While deep in his cups, Jack is
beaten and pressed into service on a merchant ship. Somehow, he managed to
hold on to his grisly trophy.
And that's just the beginning...

More History:
Early on, after Handsome Jack had joined the crew of The Dagger, Captain
Brimstone Jack and Handsome Jack got into it. The shouting below decks
turned into a heated argument on deck. No one quite remembers what the
argument was about or who threw the first punch, but Brimstone Jack nearly
beat Handsome Jack to death. Many of the crew thought Jack crawled off to
die, but he left his cabin several days later. Still bruised and puffy, but with
a new gleam in his eye. Some think that he made a deal with the devil, others
say he went mad for a spell. After that, you would have thought Brimstone
and Handsome Jack were life long best friends.

Okay the next couple steps in character creation are:
Brinksmanship
Brinksmanship is equal to the greatest of Soul, Devil, Brutality or
Ambition.
Brinksmanship means your pirate’s willingness to commit
ever more, to win. It means escalating both risk and violence.
You’ll roll it when your character fights or leads others in a fight,
be it fist to fist, sword to sword, pistol to pistol, or broadside to
broadside. You’ll roll your Brinksmanship; your enemy will roll
dice of her own.

Profile
Now, every pirate owns some combination of a long wicked knife,
a sword, and a pistol. Additional to those, which of the following
weapons does your character keep to hand? Choose at most two,
and you needn’t choose any:
A second sword, for the off hand, as the Florentines do
A brace of pistols
Some distinctive hand weapon, like a hatchet, a cudgel, a
slaver’s whip, or a blacksmith’s hammer
A sharpshooter’s long musket
Grenades
Not a weapon, but your pirate’s a great hulking brute with fists
like big stones
Not a weapon, but your pirate’s tattoos and savage demeanor
are frightening in themselves
Not a weapon, but your pirate is, while slight, nevertheless
quick, wiry-strong, and vicious
Also, if your pirate’s suffered mutilation, name a disability your
character suffers accordingly: a lost limb, a lost eye, a split tongue,
terrible scars.
While your pirate’s fully armed, Profile is equal to 2 plus the
number of additional weapons you chose (0 to 2), minus the
number of disabilities you chose (0 or 1).
For all pirates, soldiers and sailors, disarmed means Profile 1.
When your pirate fights, you’ll compare Profile vs Profile to
award one side or the other the advantage.

And that is it for stats. All that is left is the characters outstanding bargains which requires us to know who all the pirates. So far we have:

Eamon "Courthouse" Connolly
Handsome Jack
[Unnamed pirate played by Griffsnog]

The choices for a bargain you have with another player are(you only chose one):
(Said pirate) swore to back me for ship’s captain
(Said pirate) swore to help me (name an ambition)
(Said pirate) owes me 3 Leisure
(Said pirate) swore to protect me from (name a violence)
(Said pirate) owes me his life
(Said pirate) swore to fight by my side when all others desert
me.

After that I have get to choose one or two bargains for a player from the following list:
(Said pirate), you swore to come back to sweet Abigail and
make her a rich woman
(Said pirate), you swore to Captain Rutherford that you would
deliver the Dagger to him.
(Said pirate), you swore to Brimstone Jack that you would sink
the Dagger rather than see her taken.
(Said pirate), you swore to Parson Bickford that you would
renounce your pirating ways and serve Christ instead
(Said pirate), you swore to Brimstone Jack that you’d die
before you let (and here name another pirate) captain the
Dagger.

I we only get three players I'll be nice and chose one player to suffer one of these bargains. More than that and two players are going to get a bargain.

When your pirate strikes a bargain with another character, you put
your Soul in hock to the other character’s player. One time, until
such time as your pirate has fulfilled the bargain, that other player
may withhold from your side of any roll dice equal to your Soul.
this act also fulfills: your pirate, thus punished, has no further
obligation to the bargain.
Once a bargain’s struck, treat each of its specifications as its own
obligation, held and fulfilled independent of any others.
You cannot forgive an unfulfilled obligation. the generosity
allowed you is to decline to withhold dice as is your right. Each
opportunity declined is an act of forgiveness, but never the final
one. You can never give someone’s Soul back and their obligation
unmet.

I had a busy week planning and cleaning up for my birthday party. I've purchased the rules. I'll download and go through them tonight.

I'm going to go with a Celtic rigger (able bodied seaman). Totally unfitting job but I like the idea of climbing around through the rigging in a kilt.

I created a wiki for this game:
http://afterthecaptainwaspoisond.wikispaces.com/home

I was wondering how you guys wanna play this. Do you want me to handle the regular dice rolls(Since I have to roll against you anyway) while you guys do your own fight rolls? Do you want a separate thread for IC?

Took a while to get the download sent to me from the unstore. I have stats and stuff fleshed out. Now just need to work all the nasties into his background.

He is going to seem out of his element in a kilt and some chainmaille while wielding a long sword, burta and throwing axe along with pistols and other piratey things.

Also do we pick from the goals or does the GM? And are they supposed the be kept secret?

You chose your own goals and they are as secret as you want them to be. Does your pirate talk about how he going to be captain someday or how that bastard bishop had him flogged and he's going to get what's coming. Or does he secretly dream of owning land and being regarded highly by society.

I like your concept by the way. Rigging in a kilt, people must hate to work under you.

So goatunit has decided not to play, due to his busy schedule. And since it seems that nobody else is interested, once Griffsnog get his character done, and we do the initial bargains and ship creation, we'll start. If somebody wants to join later it'll be easy to write them in, The Dagger does have a crew of 80.

So here's what the crew knows of "The Celt" or Black Stewart

He appeared on the dagger after a particularly bloody raid. He was found on the deck by the doctor half naked in only a kilt and only a single bloody boot. He was clutching a claymore caked in thick blood it looked as if it was made of cooling lava in the morning sun.

He was obviously a Scott but seemed a man out of time. He was covered in blue tattoos, not of any naval design like the chickens and pigs some of the mates had on their feet but solid blue swirls, lines and even knots. He also had the brand of a pirate on the back of his hand. The captain needed men and pressed him into service to pay for the doctor's work.

It soon became obvious he was not a seafarer but had a knack for it and spent much of his labour working in the rigging and on the sails. the captain detested the his sight and frequently had him flogged for having his pieces of eight flapping in the wind whenever he happened to look up and catch a glimpse of them. It also happened whenever someone found crudely carved pieces of wood in feminine shapes.

During boardings and raids he was bloodthirsty and cutthroat. He was savage, he even scared some of the crew. He didn't seem to kill for pleasure or hatred he seemed to kill for the blood. When he made his kill more blood than what seemed possible gushed from his victims. Most of the crew told stories of how they saw him jump out of the rigging and slaying multiple foes in his fall. They were sure he had a death wish.

The past few months he has seemed more upbeat towards other crew members and has been humming and singing chanties. His bond with the doctor having become stronger with each week when they talk while his wounds from battle or floggings have been tended to. He was also fond of the navigator. The man's charts of te sea goddess' domain perplexed and amused him for e was sure tge islands moved and floated around the mainland.

Aside from them the only other person he should have considered a "friend" was the cook who has turned out to be a traitor.
