Have you read the rules to Monopoly?
I heard this question on Pulp Gamer Out of Character and it made me curious.

Re: Have you read the rules to Monopoly?
The Werefrog do know the rules to Monopoly. The Werefrog remember one time, while in high school, The Werefrog was in a triva competition, and a question regarding the rules of Monopoly was asked. The question was regarding what occurs, according to the official rules, when a player lands on "Free Parking" in Monopoly. The other team buzzed first, and was allowed to answer. They got it wrong by stating the player gets all the money in the middle of the board.
The Werefrog then was able to buzz to answer. The Werefrog answered correctly, and the judge said something along the lines of, "Your answer was more complete than what they gave here."
Yes, The Werefrog know the rules of Monopoly. The Werefrog prefer to play by all the official rules. The Werefrog like auctioning the deeds when the person landing there doesn't want it. The Werefrog hate the idea of "immunity" when landing on a space owned by another player.

Yes. It has been a long time but back in high school I actually read the rules. My family referenced something (I don't recall what) and we found out we were doing it wrong. I kept glancing through and realized we had made other mistakes so I went ahead and actually read the whole thing.
I would actually have to go back and review them because it has been so long.

I specifically remember reading the rules once at a friend's house, but I've never played a game of monopoly by the book - excluding the times I played on SNES or whatever.

I've read the rules but haven't had the chance to actually play by them correctly. Its too bad the game most responsible for people thinking board games are snorefests is so often played incorrectly, because I've heard that if you play by the rules as written, its actually fun.

My family always played by the rules as written, not that we ever finished a game. The least unenjoyable play was the time we called it after a mere hour-and-a-half because my younger sister lost her shit and sent the board and pieces flying. I don't recall ever playing after that. Refuse to have it in the house, now.

We played that game quite a bit as both kids and as "adults" of 18-22ish. I think I read the rules both as a kid and again when the Star Wars edition came out since I was shithammered and couldn't remember how to play.

werefrog wrote: The Werefrog hate the idea of "immunity" when landing on a space owned by another player. Is that an optional rule of some kind? I've read the rules a couple of times over the years, but I've never played it exactly by the rules. We always had the "land on free parking and you win the lottery" rule and rarely ever use the auction rule (I like the auction rule). BTW, in some versions, the Free Parking rule is listed as an option. My mother-in-law ruined the last game of monopoly we tried to play. All the properties got split up between the players in such a fashion that no one could trade for a monopoly without dealing with her - and she refused to deal. She said "she didn't believe in that." I explained to her that the game would never end if she wasn't going to deal (because you couldn't lose more than $200 in rent on a single turn around the board and everyone gets $200 for going around go), but the math made her eyes glaze over. We wasted about another hour or so before we just quit.

Re: Have you read the rules to Monopoly?
What do you mean "refused to deal", like she wouldn't trade properties or sell them or whatever? That's stupid. She may as well say "Oh I don't treat a Straight Flush in poker as being better than two pair because I don't believe in it".
It's been years since I actually played or read Monopoly. I get the general gist though.
