Post Skirmish based mini wargames
So, I'm looking for some info on some Skirmish based wargames.

If you have been following my other posts you'll know I just got into mini-margames, and have a blood bowl team and a Warhammer Fantasy Goblin horde. And I'd like to try a Skirmish game, for various reasons.

The obvious choice would be Mordheim, since I already have a bunch of GW stuff, but I'd like to branch out. I hear good things about Malifaux as well, and kinda like the genre bending in that.

Personally, there are three main reasons I want to try a skirmish game:

1) With less models, its cheaper. And if its cheaper, not only is it less of a blow on my wallet, I may be able to get my friends into wargaming with me. 'cuz right now the pricetag on a Warhammer Fantasy army says there ain't no way I'm playing that game outside of my FLGS, my friends would rather use the money I spent on a Fantasy army on say... An X-Box 360.

2) I love painting mini's. Absolutely a blast for me. I think I like painting more than I like playing the game. With a 175 model Goblin army... yeah that's a lot of painting, but its a lot of the exact same painting, over and over and over again. I could take the time and use greenstuff to make every model unique I guess, but that would take forever, and would ultimately be pointless as 90% of my goblins exist to make ranks bigger so I get more attacks. They arn't actually good at anything. They are making their way to the dead pile soon.

In a Skirmish game you get like what, 5 to 10 models or so? I could really take my time and make every single one of them look amazing. Or at least try to. I'm still learning my way around a paintbrush, but I like to think I'm doing good.

3) The actual gameplay, of course! Admittedly I know very little 'bout skirmish games. But, at least I'm hoping, one of the biggest difference between skirmish and a full on war game is the mobility of your troops? 'cuz a unit of 50 goblins takes forever to get across the table and start hitting stuff (It doesn't help that the last two armies I played against were shooting armies). I don't know if I'm right about this but I imagine that a Skirmish type game would allow me more mobility. Not specifically speed, but more of an opportunity to dodge behind cover and use the terrain more to my advantage.

...I just realize that 90% of what I've typed out is pointless in terms of what I'm asking.

Anyways, the short of it is: I'd like some info on Various Skirmish games so I can pick one to my liking. I'm mostly interested in genre bending ones with really nice models, but post about any ones you have info for. If you can, try to be as detailed as possible. Literally all I know about Skirmish games right now is 'A mini war game with a few guys instead of a whole army'. Thanks in advance.

If you already like GW stuff, try out some Necromunda
Never played it, but it sounds really fun and still has a semi-active community.

If you're looking for a skirmish minis game, I've heard great things about Necromunda also. I also hear that it can be tough to find people to play with.

Necromunda is great! I also of course love Mordie. Inquisitor is pretty fun too and much more detailed. I know a lot of guys use the 28mm instead of the 54... slackers  ... so you may be able to go super cheap there from the used figs case or ebay.

Thanks for the info, i shall have to check out Necromunda. What kind of setting is it? I've heard people mention the game but I actually know like nothing about it.

On Malifaux, I found this hour long video in which two guys play through a game, and its one of their firsts games so much is explained as it goes. Its very informative.

Actually, I've been subscribed to this channel for a while now, this is just the first time I saw this particular video.

Try that link. It has all of the rulebooks and expansions for the setting.

The basic is that you're in the lower bowels of a mile high arcology. You get a gang together and fight against others for money. Very GW GrimDark.

I'd be remiss im my duties if I didn't recommend the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle game from GW. It's easy to learn and play and was designed for tense games with a handful of figures on each side. What's more, the game mechanics are solid enough to allow it to be easily retooled for other genres: I've seen versions of the rules for westerns, pirates, Pulp, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail!

WH40K used to have something called the kill team rules that fit this perfectly (especially if you like 40K.) Unfortunately, they pulled the rules from all of their regional web sites. Freaking pin heads. I might be able to possibly to find copies of those pages if you're interested.

'Eh, 40k never interested me that much. Its too... dominated by Space Marines.

LotR is Skirmish? I've heard of LotR of course, I didn't know it was Skirmish though.

We never really had that problem. Really good mix of armies at our FLGS.
