Post Tabletop - Wil Wheaton's new board game web show
"Wil Wheaton is working with Felicia Day on a new show called Tabletop, which will air on the YouTube Channel Geek and Sundry. The show will be about board games and gaming in general. This is how he describes it: 'My ulterior motive with Tabletop is to show by example how much fun it is to play boardgames. I want to show that Gamers aren't all a bunch of weirdos who can't make eye contact when they talk to you, and that getting together for a game night is just as social and awesome as getting together to watch Sportsball, or to play poker, or for a LAN party, or whatever non-gamers do with their friends. I want to inspire people to try hobby games, and I want to remove the stigma associated with gaming and gamers.' The first show airs April 2nd."

I watched the first show, and it's pretty good, swing by, and check it out if you get a few minutes.

Second episode dropped at Geek and Sundry (YouTube) on the 20th. Good stuff so far, entertaining and educational.

Worthy enough to subscribe to even if I don't care for the other fluff.

The first episode got me all excited to play Small World and when I did, I had a blast (technically, I played the underground version, but it's about the same).

I was a little worried that the Settlers episode would be boring since I've already played it a lot, but it still managed to be entertaining. I think the real value here, though, is introducing people to new games that they otherwise wouldn't think of trying or have a chance to play.

The best thing is that the show works in multiple ways.

First, it absolutely works to introduce new games to gamers (i.e. the audience). I've never played Small World. I now want to. I've told my wife to put that game on her list of presents for me.

But, if that's all it did, it would struggle since I expect a lot of the audience will have played many of the games they will cover. i.e. I own Catan and all the expansions. So it has a second function, watching (nerd-)famous people play games. It can be entertaining to watch people you might know in environments you don't normally see them in. AND the show can introduce the audience to new (nerd-friendly people, blogs, etc.

I've only watched the first episode so far, but I enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to the second.

I've seen the first three, and it's been consistently entertaining.

Also, I now want to get... well, all 5 of the games that have been reviewed so far, but definitely the 3 quicker games that comprised episode three.

Tsuro and Get Bit are the only two games they've done I didn't already own. Get Bit didn't look that fun to me.

Next Episode is Ticket To Ride. That is probably the single most played boardgame I own. To the point that my board literally broke from overuse. Still works, just in two pieces.

I can see the beer and pretzel fun/strategy in Get Bit, but Tsuro has captured my interest and the next time I get some mad money I'm going to pick that up at the FLGS.
