Post Re: Map making software
The sleeping brain workings in strange ways. Over the years I've accumulated a LOT of public domain textures as part of my 3D modelling hobby. So, last night in my dreams I was using Dundjinni but with all of their textures stripped out and replaced with PD ones. Essentially turning the program into Pubdjinni.

Now that I'm awake, I still like the idea, but I'm wondering if I put that much effort in would it be worth it?

Post Re: Map making software
It turns out that Unity 3d (which is a freebie game creation suite) actually has a rather nifty terrain editor built in and can actually render some nice scenes. I'm not too sure on how much effort it would take to make a patchwork map out of it, but it has potential since you can also do plants and paint directly on the height maps.

The license allows you to make games with the included resources for free. I need to review the license to see if that applies to non-Unity projects as well. Even so, it would be quite do-able to use your own textures and use the tool to assemble and render it.

The brain had another map making dream over the weekend, 'paint' the hexes and slopes directly to a height map and use that for building your scene/map. Depending on the lighting effects, this would be a cheap way to create hilly terrain that would easily align with an overlaid a hex grid.
